Join the IAS for the Africa Research Summit

The Institute of Advanced Studies invites you to join them for the inaugural Africa Research Summit, running from Monday 28 October - 1 November.

Led by Dr Oluwasola (Sola) Afolabi (ABCE) and Dr Hibbah Araba Osei-Kwasi (SSEHS), the summit will bring together leading global experts and scholars to share insights from Sub-Saharan Africa and explore solutions for addressing climate challenges.

Open to all staff and students, the week-long programme will include a cultural exhibition, interdisciplinary discussions, and talks. There will also be opportunities to learn more about the University’s world-leading research.

Each day will be structured around one of the University's three strategic themes, with topics including:

  • Lunch, launch and cultural exhibition (Monday 28 October). Curated by Kerri Akiwowo, the exhibition will showcase items with origins in African heritage, identity, people and place, loaned by members of the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ community.
  • Sport, Health and Wellbeing (Tuesday 29 October) – exploring the role of sport as a catalyst for societal resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa and how the UK can adopt similar strategies, integrating sports into sustainability and climate action.
  • Climate Change and Net Zero (Wednesday 30 October) – focusing on climate change and net-zero goals, with lessons from Sub-Saharan Africa on resilience and scalable solutions that support the UK's net-zero ambitions.
  • Vibrant and Inclusive Communities (Thursday 31 October) - examining inclusive urban development for social cohesion, economic resilience, and sustainability, exploring how successful strategies from Sub-Saharan Africa can inform the UK’s urban planning.

This event will run in hybrid format, with both in-person or online attendance options available.
