Students recognised at the Female Engineer of the Year Awards

On 19 April, the Female Engineer of the Year (FEY) Awards Ceremony was hosted at the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ campus.

The Awards were hosted by the Women’s Engineering Society, alongside Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, Rachel Thomson, and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s Engineering School Deans. The event celebrated female engineering within the University, academic achievements, professional commitment, and contributions to the engineering community.

The FEY Awards celebrate the achievements of some truly remarkable young women. Engineering is a field that continues to push boundaries and shape the world around us, and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is proud to be a nurturing and inclusive environment for the next generation of innovators.

Among these talented individuals, three undergraduate and postgraduate students showcased exceptional commitment, academic excellence, and an unwavering passion for engineering. Nine students were recognised at the Awards, including Undergraduate Winner, Postgraduate Winner, and runner-up awards, recognising other students nominated and their impressive contributions to the field of engineering.

Part A student, Grace Newman, was awarded as Undergraduate Winner described as tremendously motivated in professional pursuits and refreshingly proactive in giving back to her community. Having already undertaken work experience with Mercedes-AMG, McLauren and JLR as well as actively engaging in LU Motorsport, Extreme E and acting as a Regional Advisor on the Youth Board for STEMettes.

Huyen Le was awarded as Postgraduate Winner, having been described by peers as passionate, kind and hardworking, with a clear a dedication to mentoring, teaching and advocating for women in STEM. She has taken impactful actions to defy stereotypes and pave the way for more women in STEM research through sharing her story in podcasts, leading a 14-week mindfulness series for the research community and more, alongside her impressive work on antibacterial surface coatings.

Georgia Collis, Chair of the Women’s Engineering Society, commented: “It's been a pleasure to revive the FEY Awards this year. I'm incredibly impressed by the calibre of nominations and sheer dedication from our female engineers at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

“It was a very close competition! We have a truly remarkable community of young women with a tremendous commitment to professional development, academic excellence, and paving the way for future female engineers. I have no doubt that each FEY finalist will go on to achieve exceptional heights in their chosen careers.”
