PhD ThinkBig competition in Sport, Health and Wellbeing

On Friday 2 February, the Associate Pro Vice-Chancellors for Sport, Health and Wellbeing hosted an awards event for Doctoral Researchers.

The awards celebrated entrants in a competition that explored specific aspects of sport, health, and wellbeing and expanded the boundaries of their individual research domains.

In an effort to promote innovation and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among Doctoral Researchers, the ThinkBig competition encouraged creative thinking and problem-solving within these crucial fields.

Participants included both individual entrants and small groups across five of our Schools. Entries covered multiple topics, including:

  • The use of data analytics in sport, health and wellbeing
  • The economical and societal advantages of investing in initiatives that promote wellbeing through sports and activities
  • Engineering research contributing to personalised healthcare solutions
  • How inclusivity of sports impacts the overall health and long-term sustainability of sports communities and organisations

Of all of the brilliant submissions, three prize winners were selected and all entrants were celebrated at the awards ceremony.

Dr Diwei Zhou, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Sport, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Our PhD participants approached these challenges with a blend of creativity and critical thinking. Their innovative responses demonstrated a deep understanding and commitment to the fields of sport, health, and wellbeing.

“We are particularly proud of the inclusive nature of our competition, attracting both home and international students, and welcoming entries from individuals as well as small groups.

"Our next goal is to establish a PhD network focused on sport, health, and wellbeing. This network will serve as a platform for organising and implementing various activities within these domains. We extend a warm invitation to Doctoral Researchers wishing to join or take a leadership role in this network."
