The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards have been created to recognise the ways our staff, both in teams and as individuals, demonstrate their commitment to the University's aims and values, especially around togetherness.
More detailed information on all of the shortlisted nominees and winners will be released over the coming weeks. The winners are as follows:
Education – Student Learning
Education: For significant impact on student education – Academic Language Support Service
The Academic Language Support Service team designed a new teaching approach – COLOSSUS (COllaborative Learning: Organising Student-led Small group Seminars) – which enhances the learning experiences of students. It enabled student-centred learning and student feedback has been exceptionally positive.
Innovation in education: For significant innovation in education provision – Christopher Kay and Jenny Ardley
Christopher Kay and Jenny Ardley won for their innovative teaching practice in the design and development of the multi-award winning final year criminology module Rehabilitation and Recovery.
Enhancing the student experience: For significant enhancement of the student experience – Hospitality assistants and Sophie Hyde
Hospitality assistants were recognised for the work they do with students, encouraging them and supporting them in their university journey.
Sophie Hyde launched the new Student Success Academy in the Careers service – recruiting and training her team to provide a comprehensive programme of support for students.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
EDI achievement: For activities that have made the University significantly more equitable, diverse and inclusive – Making º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Great
Dr Pooja Goddard and Dr Eugénie Hunsicker produced a video on the diversity of international women at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in collaboration with the filmmaker Dr Irina Linke. The film features 60 women working as professional services and academic staff across the University, introducing themselves in their language of choice.
Campus improvement: For enhancing student life and sustainability – London Carers Group
Ksenija Kuzmina and Emily Hayday provided support for those in our community who balance their work with caring responsibilities and it was a vital service during the pandemic.
Health and wellbeing: For enhancing the health and wellbeing of the University’s staff and students – Sarah Van Zoelen
Sarah has transformed the Occupational Health provision at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and has developed the wellbeing framework for University.
Unsung Heroes: For an individual or team who does vital work for the University and is deserving of broader recognition – Graduation Support Team
In addition to their normal duties, the Domestic Services team set up the facilities for graduation and provided marshals for all graduation events.
International Engagement and Impact
For outstanding international engagement that has enhanced the University’s profile – Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience (STEER)
STEER hosts projects which between them have received over £90million of investment. The Co-Directors of STEER, Professors Ed Brown and Mark Howells and Dr Long Seng To, are building partnerships with governments and third sector partners around the world and leading research projects which are having a significant effect on the mitigation of climate change globally.
Sporting Excellence and Opportunity
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ sports personality of the year: For outstanding achievement in sport – Jamie Clapham
Jamie Clapham has taken the men's football team to league champions, knock-out champions and the FA Vase Semi-final, further than any º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Football team has ever got before.
Sports achievement: For significant impact on sport policy and practice – Mark King
Professor Mark King is the world leading expert in bowling analysis. Through his research, he has been involved in cases on behalf of the ICC and has provided expert opinion on cases.
Partnerships
For activities that had had significant local, regional, national or international impact – ICAROS
ICAROS won for its flagship international partnerships with Australia and China. ICAROS currently involves a collaboration between Research Centres on 3 continents including º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ (UK), Queensland University of Technology through CARRS-Q (Australia) and Tongji University (China).
Research and Innovation
Research leadership: For developing a high-performing research environment and culture – Camilla Gilmore
Camilla Gilmore provided successful leadership of the bid for the ESRC 'Centre for Early Mathematics Learning' Research Centre.
Research team: For achieving excellent research and innovation outcomes through collaborative partnership – Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Combustion System Aerothermal Processes
The team delivered the National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology (NCCAT), a multi-million-pound project supported by government and industry.
Impactful research and innovation: For research and innovation that has delivered significant and sustained impact on society – Sport Performance Strand of the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport
The PHC is an internationally regarded leader in Para sport with continued significant and sustained impact following the Tokyo Games that has been translated across the sports continuum.
Vice Chancellor’s Special Award – º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ London Major Response colleagues
Leila, Dipesh, Mitul, Aaron, Curtley and Mahtab, both University staff and key partners at our London campus displayed amazing courage and calmness during a major incident at the University. Their care, skills and professionalism were nothing short of heroic in the most challenging of circumstances.
