Double degree º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ – Sciences Po Lyon
A special bilateral partnership between º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and the Institut d’études politiques (also known as “Sciences Po”) in Lyon, France, gives opportunities to students enrolled at either university to graduate with a “double degree” (one from each institution). Exactly how it works depends on your home institution. Details below.
For º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students
Sciences Po Lyon is one of France’s “Grandes écoles" or elite schools. It confers one single Masters-level degree, its Diplôme, after five years of study. Students in the Department of International Relations, Politics and History and students on a human geography pathway in the Department of Geography and Environment have the opportunity to apply to study in Lyon in two ways: either as a standard study exchange third year (or “Part I”) between their Parts B and C (thereby potentially qualifying for our Diploma in International Studies or DPS and then returning in their fourth year to complete their Part C), or both in the third year and again in a fifth year after they graduate from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ (qualifying for both our DPS and the Sciences Po’s prestigious Diplôme).
Part B students who apply for a study exchange can select Sciences Po Lyon whether or not they intend to return there for a fifth year. This third year in Lyon can be made to consist entirely of modules in English (in addition to some modules teaching French as a foreign language). Provided they pass the required credits, spending such a year in Lyon qualifies º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students for º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s DPS. Fees in this third year are payable to their home institution (º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ).
Students who complete their third year in Lyon can then apply to return to Lyon after they complete their studies (during their fourth year) at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Provided they are accepted, they enter Sciences Po Lyon in the fifth and final year of the Diplôme, which they can therefore earn just like any other Sciences Po student. This fifth year includes some modules in French, although a majority can be in English. Fees in the fifth year are payable to Sciences Po Lyon.
In short, this partnership gives selected º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students the opportunity to earn, in five years, a BA (and a DPS) from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and a Masters’ level qualification (the Diplôme) from Sciences Po Lyon, without having to apply separately to study on a postgraduate programme.
For Sciences Po Lyon students
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is consistently ranked as one of the UK’s top universities. Sciences Po Lyon students can select º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ as their destination for their third year, taking modules at our Department of International Relations, Politics and History (on our main campus in the East Midlands). The modules on offer are updated annually and published in our module catalogue for exchange students in IRPH. Fees in the third year are payable to their home institution (Sciences Po Lyon).
Sciences Po Lyon students having spent their third year at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ then have the opportunity to return to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ for the fifth year of their Diplôme by applying for a Masters from the courses available either in our School of Social Sciences and Humanities (in the East Midlands campus) or at some of the Institutes at our London University London campus (namely: from the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs; the Institute for International Management; the Institute for Media and Creative Industries; the Institute for Sports Business; or from select cross-institution programmes on Development and Social Change).
Fees in the fifth year are payable to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Sciences Po Lyon students are entitled to receive a 30% combined Alumni and Partnership bursary (fee discount) applicable to international student fees, with an additional 5% scholarship available for academically excellent students.
In short, this partnership gives selected Sciences Po Lyon students the opportunity to earn, in five years, the Diplôme from Sciences Po Lyon and a Masters degree from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
