Carbon Literacy

The Department of Geography and Environment at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is committed to offering Carbon Literacy training to its students.

Carbon Literacy is “an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

Organised through the Carbon Literacy Project, Carbon Literacy training for certification was recognised by the UN at Paris COP21 with the award of TAP100, one of 100 worldwide Transformative Action Programs.

Carbon Literacy allows students to relate their learning on topics such as climate change, sustainability, and development, to their everyday lives and to their future employment. Moreover, given that climate-related news is often very negative, it aids student wellbeing by supporting them to take authentic, realistic actions in their own lives and communities, according to their own values.

Students and staff from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Geography and Environment are among the first 100,000 citizens globally certified as Carbon Literate!

Students have made some incredibly impactful pledges to deliver their best climate action where they are: from active travel and dietary changes on a personal and household level, to leading a solar PV project in Malawi, arranging sports kit donation schemes with friends and colleagues, and sustainability co-ordination for sports clubs.

We’re proud to graduate students who can make an impact in education, employment and the world we all share.
