This new initiative aims to increase OEP’s access to experts in environmental research and policy, to provide insight and advice, and to support the practical delivery and performance of environmental strategies. The College will be used to gather an array of evidence, identify key areas of research interest and increase the provision of external expertise.
Dr Worne is one of only 58 experts selected from across academia and industry to join the College. Chosen for her expertise in aquatic pollution and ecology, Dr Worne, a º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Doctoral Prize Fellow working in Geography and Environment, has research experience investigating the impacts of nutrient cycling, pollution and climate change on the ecosystems of ponds, lakes, rivers and oceans.
The duties of an expert in the College will include identifying priorities and knowledge gaps, providing expert input on environmental issues and emerging future challenges, and working as a reviewer for development and outputs of relevant projects. Dr Worne’s advice and expertise can help to improve and enforce environmental legislation, drawing, for example, on her current fellowship research investigating the impacts of sewage effluent on standing water bodies.
On the appointment, Dr Worne said: “It is a very exciting opportunity for me to be selected for the College of Experts. With increasing pressure on the government and industries to improve their environmental policies, the OEP represents a positive step towards enhanced monitoring and enforcement of relevant legislation.”
“It is great to see how academic research can play a valuable role in supporting public bodies, to ensure delivery of the UK Government Environmental Improvement Plan. I am most looking forward to using my research and expertise to contribute towards delivering projects and policies that improve the protection of vulnerable and overexploited aquatic ecosystems.”
Head of Geography and Environment, Michael Hoyler commented: “I am delighted that Savannah’s expertise has been recognised through an appointment to the OEP’s College of Experts. Impactful research is a hallmark of what we do at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, and I look forward to seeing Savannah’s exciting work help bring about meaningful change in the protection of our environment.”
