Welcome to Geography and Environment

Michael Hoyler

We are a friendly, vibrant and inclusive community comprising over 500 undergraduate and masters' students, 40 postgraduate researchers and 80 academic, research, professional and technical services staff. I’m very pleased to be a member of that community, working with talented colleagues to find out new things about the way the Earth and its people interact and to teach a subject that I love.

We conduct cutting-edge research, working internationally with other researchers, industry and government to increase understanding of our rapidly changing planet. We are recognised for our excellence and leadership across six interdisciplinary research themes: Cities; Children, Youth and Families; Climate-Water-Energy; Hydroclimate, Risk and Resilience; Migration and Nation; Understanding and Managing Environmental Change. Above all, we share a fascination for the world around us and how it works – have a look at our Cabinet of Curiosities to find out more!

Our commitment to the student experience sees all core teaching conducted by academic staff. This ensures that our students benefit from high-quality, research-informed teaching enabling the very best learning experience. Our taught courses include five undergraduate and four postgraduate degrees covering a range of human and physical geography disciplines. Students choose from a fascinating range of topics (for example, Climate Change to Global Migration), teaching styles and types of assessment. We pride ourselves in supporting our students to fulfil their potential and to graduate as confident, capable, adaptable individuals who are highly employable.

Geography and Environment is housed in a redesigned and refurbished building, with purpose-built, state of the art research and teaching laboratories. We are part of a larger, world-renowned community of social and environmental scientists and humanities scholars in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

I hope that you take the opportunity to explore what we have to offer and I know that you will find studying or working with us a wonderful experience.
