Research Groups

The English Department currently has three research groups.

Contemporary Research Group

A distinct research strength of staff and postgraduates at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ addresses 'the contemporary', asking critical questions about how the contemporary is experienced, theorised, produced and contested across contemporary culture.

Cultural Currents: Nineteenth to Twentieth Century

Our research group has a wealth of expertise in nineteenth and twentieth-century literature and culture, considering transitions and continuities between the 'Victorian' to the 'modern'. We have particular interests in the Gothic, sensation and Weird fiction, the fin-de-siècle and modernism.

Health Humanities

Our research explores the intersection of English, Humanities, Health, Healthcare, and Wellbeing. We have particular interests in mental health in the nineteenth century, ageing and the contemporary, early modern dietary culture, and early modern women’s health, pregnancy, and childbirth.

Editing and Textual Scholarship

The members of the Editing and Textual Scholarship research group are the editors of some of the most prestigious scholarly editions of literature in English used by literary scholars and students the world over. We also think and write about current issues in the theory and practice of textual edit
