Research
English at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is a thriving research community that is internationally recognised for its excellence and impact across a diverse range of fields in drama, literature, publishing, creative writing and cultural studies.
Our research is rigorous, creative, and impactful, and offers an ideal environment for curious scholarship. English staff and postgraduates form a lively and diverse community driven by a desire for exploration, knowledge, and innovation. We combine interdisciplinary theory and practice, and explore a wide range of areas including all the major literary periods from the Medieval to the Contemporary. The breadth of our research along with our collaboration with external partners means that our work has a meaningful impact in the world.
Research in English feeds directly into two School Research Challenges: Dimensions of Inequality and Hidden Voices and Contested Pasts. Our work also aligns with the University’s designated strategic themes, particularly Vibrant and Inclusive Communities, and Sport, Health and Wellbeing. The English Department also runs three research groups (Cultural Currents: Nineteenth to Twentieth Century, Contemporary, and Health Humanities) hosting a regular programme of seminars and events for staff, postgraduate students and visitors.
