After graduating from University College London in 1969 in Psychology, Duncan completed his PhD in 1973 with Hans Eysenck at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. He was a Lecturer in the Psychology Department at Queen's University Belfast before coming to the Social Sciences Department at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in 1977, retiring in 2013. Duncan is currently Emeritus Professor in Psychological Health.
Duncan has been Joint Editor (1995-2000) and Associate Editor (1993-1995, 2000-2001) of the British Journal of Medical Psychology and its successor Psychology and Psychotherapy (2001-2010) as well as Associate Editor of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (2004-2009). He has been on the Editorial Boards of seven other journals. Duncan was Chair of the Books and Special Projects Group of The British Psychological Society (1998-2001) as well as a member of the group (1995-1998). He has also been a member of the BPS Journals Committee (1995-2000).
Duncan's research interests and publications include such topics such as mental health, personality, personal relationships, organizational commitment, psychotherapy and counselling. He has authored or co-authored over 82 papers in peer-reviewed journals and over 36 first or revised editions of books.
