Apart from being in the UK's top 5 for Materials Science, I chose º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ because I found that the university's industry links that offered excellent future prospects for placement and graduate employment. Whilst visiting on the Open Day, I fell in love with the campus and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere felt like home to me.
My course
The course is well-balanced and introduces us to a diverse range of skills, such as CAD, coding, design and laboratory techniques, which are beneficial to future employment.
I enjoyed studying technological entrepreneurship during my Master's year, as it provided a unique perspective on technical development where I learnt the various aspects involved in launching innovative product developments. I also enjoyed the modules focused on sustainability, they reiterated the importance of the field and highlighted why research and development of materials is crucial.
The Department's smaller size was incredibly beneficial, it allowed lecturers and professors to really get to know us and I always felt comfortable seeking their help.
The facilities on the course were excellent. We had access to the newly built STEMLab and the world-class characterisation centre, both of which greatly enhanced my learning experience by allowing me to cement my theoretical knowledge through practical work.
My º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ experience
The social atmosphere on campus is excellent. There is an abundance of sports clubs and societies, meaning there is a group of people for everyone. Halls and departments alike host many events, making it very easy to meet people.
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ has truly inspired me. Being surrounded by athletes and like-minded individuals has shown me that with grit and determination, anything is possible. The success of the university's students and alumni illustrates the exceptional support º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ provides, helping you to always strive for the best version of yourself.
One of my greatest achievements is to have received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Rag (the University's charity sector), for my contributions over the last 5 years. Rag was where I found my 'º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Family', and it was extremely special to receive this.
There are too many favourite things to name about º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ! I loved having access to the world-class facilities, being able to balance sport, societies, going out and work, as well as having friends from all over the globe.
My advice to prospective students
The scope of the discipline is niche yet unlimited! Materials Science forms part of the basis for all other forms of engineering, and it is an excellent route to take if you're interested in a broad engineering discipline.
