Learn a new language
Gain valuable new skills with the help of the University Language Centre and give your degree an international edge.
Students on nearly every undergraduate course will have access to a range of language programmes run by the Language Centre. Providing your degree timetable allows for these optional 10-credit modules, you can opt to study French, German, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
Taking a language and expanding your vocabulary can also broaden your career opportunities, no matter what field you choose to specialise in. Language skills will undoubtably help you stand out to employers in a demanding and competitive job market.
You can gain entry onto any language programme regardless of your previous experience. Our team will help you progress and develop a solid grasp of the language, as well as essential communication skills and a better understanding of cultural practices and perspectives.
Through continued practice, you will soon become confident enough to handle complex interactions and will be able to communicate successfully in a range of situations, at home or abroad.
These language programmes are particularly encouraged among Erasmus exchange students, so they can develop fluency in the language of their host institution before embarking on their study abroad journey.
Extra-curricular opportunities
If you prefer to develop your language skills alongside your degree studies, you can join our Extra-Curricular Language Programme, offering evening classes in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish (with reduced rates for students). In our Study Centre, which doubles up as a computer laboratory, you can also learn one of 20 languages at beginner level using self-study materials, free of charge.
