Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering
We are committed to developing and nuturing the world’s top design, engineering and technology talent. Our degrees are informed by our world-leading researchers as well as our extensive links across industry, to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to meet the engineering challenges facing our society.
Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ
Our engineering courses underpin all industrial sectors in the UK and internationally. Every course is industry focused, research driven and unique from day one, ensuring that your learning remains at the forefront of industry understanding and practise.
Any one of our courses can be the start of a fascinating and rewarding career in the domain of your choice: aerospace, automotive, rail, marine, defence, healthcare, retail, media, communications, energy and banking, to name a few.
Taught by world-leading academics, you will have the opportunity to specialise in an area of interest and add professional experience through an optional placement year, allowing you to graduate with the knowledge and skills required for a successful career your chosen industry.
For those who do not have the appropriate qualifications, each of our courses has a foundation route, giving students from a wide variety of backgrounds the opportunity to transfer onto their degree of choice, after completing a year of dedicated preparatory modules.

Links with industry
The majority of undergraduate degree programmes provide students with the opportunity to undertake a salaried placement year. If you choose to undertake a year in industry, you will complete a full year of assessed industrial training typically between years two and three of your academic studies.
Our dedicated Placements Team is notified of vacancies and opportunities throughout the academic year and provide support with the application process to help you secure a suitable placement. Additionally, our Placements Team host an annual Engineering/STEM Placement and Graduate Careers Fair, which sees over 70 external companies attend, and gives students the opportunity to network and speak to experts in their chosen fields and find out more about future career opportunities.
Facilities
We recently invested over £70 million into developing the west side of campus where the School is based. We have improved our extensive high-tech teaching space, laboratories and workshops which are used for both taught modules practical projects. This includes the STEMLab which provides additional facilities, with a ‘drop-in’ engineering workshop, teaching laboratories, workshops, computer-aided design and rapid prototyping facilities, a design studio and informal learning spaces. These further increase our ability to train and develop skilled graduates that are targeted by major employers from across the world.
We have laboratories for disciplines such as additive manufacturing, communications, control, design, electronics, internal combustion engines, manufacturing technologies, materials, mechatronics, metrology, optical engineering, programming, robotics, structural integrity, tribology, and many others.
Our computer numerical control machine tool facilities, electronics workshops, and manufacturing facilities are managed by skilled technical staff, who will work closely with you to develop ideas and support project work.

Career opportunities
All courses have an established reputation with employers in industry. Companies, therefore, target the School with sandwich year opportunities and a number of companies offer sponsorship, for which there is intense competition. Students seeking sponsorship are urged to consult publications such as Career Research and Development (CRAC) and Engineering Opportunities.
Students studying any of the School’s degree courses and intending to take up a career in the Armed Forces or Civil Service, may be eligible for financial support under the Defence STEM Undergraduate Scheme.
External scholarship potential
We are a member of the IET's Power Academy and the UK Electronics Skills Foundation, both engineering related scholarship funds supporting undergraduate students in electrical, electronic and power engineering.
