Mathematical Sciences at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ

As a postgraduate student in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ's Department of Mathematical Sciences, you will benefit from access to spacious study areas, with the latest audio-visual equipment to support teaching and research, all located in our recently refurbished mathematics building.

Your studies will further be enhanced by our stimulating seminar programme, which regularly hosts guest seminar speakers and academic visitors, some who are well-known for their mathematical research. In addition, our co-location with the Mathematics Learning Support Centre makes it easy for you to receive one-to-one drop-in support if you need it.

Research and teaching

We are proud to have an excellent reputation for high quality research that addresses real life issues today.

We attract staff and students from all over the world, making it a diverse and stimulating environment in which to study. Active in high quality research across the broad spectrum of mathematics, we have an international reputation, with 100% of Mathematical Sciences research impact rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' in REF 2021.

Our two MSc programmes give a strong grounding in areas of mathematics that are relevant to employment in a large number of sectors. The specific knowledge of the theme areas also enables graduates to pursue research careers.

Links with industry

Our strong links with industry partners is a valuable asset to the department and its research and teaching activities. Specifically on our Industrial Mathematical Modelling MSc students are able to apply their knowledge and skills at the same time as gaining hands-on experience, during summer projects often carried out at local companies.

We have a wide range of first-class facilities across campus to support you throughout your studies fully-equip you for your future endeavours.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is based in the Schofield building, located centrally on the University campus. The building has recently undergone a £4million refurbishment to equip it with dedicated resources for mathematics students.

As a postgraduate student you will benefit from 24/7 access to computer labs in the Schofield Building and will also benefit from the co-location with the Mathematics Learning Support Centre.

Within the Department of Mathematical Sciences we are committed to ensuring our graduates have a solid grounding in the subject. Our postgraduate courses are designed to help you develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking, analytical and computational skills as well as analysis and critical thinking – preparing you for wide-ranging careers or to continue in research.
