Project details
Many phenomena in life, for example the outcomes of rolling dice or radioactive decay, are the result of random processes. As a result, understanding the notion of randomness is an important goal of education and therefore features on the English National Curriculum. However, randomness is a slippery concept that has many different poorly understood facets. The aim of this project is to study different groups' conceptions of randomness using a combination of formal mathematical modelling techniques and methods from the behavioural sciences.
Specifically, the successful student will apply different mathematical models for random processes to generate images, videos, etc, that represent different notions of randomness. This will involve learning new mathematical techniques from a variety of modelling contexts and developing a top-down taxonomy of possible notions of randomness. These images, videos, and other related stimuli, will then be used in a range of behaviour studies with adults and children to develop a theoretical account of how different groups understand randomness, the extent to which intuitions of randomness are shared within and across groups, and how intuitions of randomness connect to intuitions of other conceptually related constructs. Possible empirical techniques that could be used include comparative judgement studies, controlled experiments and open-ended interviews. To successfully complete this project the student must be willing to engage in research-level mathematics as well as develop skills of conducting and analysing behavioural experiments.
The successful student will join two leading research groups: the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical Modelling (ICMM) in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and the Centre for Mathematical Cognition in the Department of Mathematics Education, They will need to develop interdisciplinary skills and work at the boundaries of two related fields.
The start date for this project is negotiable, but candidates with the necessary qualifications can start in the next few months.

Fees and funding
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
