Project details
Understanding mechanical properties and performance of various biological materials and tissues and their responses to different loading and environmental conditions is becoming increasingly important for development of new medical procedures and devices. Such materials, in contrast to traditional structural materials, demonstrate complex hierarchical microstructures formed by constituents with rather non-trivial mechanical behaviours (e.g. non-linear high deformations). Additionally, they are characterised by a high extent of variability in their microstructure and properties affected by many factors, including age, health state, nutrition, exercise etc. All these features presuppose development of new experimental, analytical and numerical approaches to assess and predict deformation, damage and fracture behaviour of biological materials and their main constituents. The project will be based on a combination of experimental and numerical techniques (to accommodate expertise and skills of a candidate in the best possible way) focused on characterisation and quantification of interaction between microstructure (morphology) and mechanical properties and performance of biological materials at various length and time scales. Among potential characterisation and testing techniques are nano- and micro-indentation, X-ray micro computed tomography, DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) and microscopy as well as different loading schemes (including creep, relaxation and/or dynamic loading). Numerical analysis will be based on multi-scale schemes employing finite elements, smooth particle hydrodynamics etc. and can include development of special elements, subroutines or codes.
The School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering has seen 100% of its research impact rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF, 2021).

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.
Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:
- School of Business and Economics: not considered
- All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
Universities given special consideration

Tuition fees for 2024-25 entry

拢4,786 Full-time degree per annum
International fee
拢27,500 Full-time degree per annum
Fees for the 2024-25 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2024, January 2025, April 2025 and July 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
There is no funding aligned to this project. This project is self-funded so applicants will be required to cover the cost of tuition fees and their own living expenses or have an external sponsor.
