Our MSc in Sports Engineering has been designed with input from industry to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing global sports equipment market. You will develop the technical and transferable skills highly sought after by the sports equipment industry and academic research.

You will be taught by sports engineering academics and industrialists who have extensive experience working within the sports equipment industry.  This expertise is reflected in the teaching, ensuring the course content is focused on the most up-to-date industry trends and challenges.

Core study areas include product design engineering in sport, measurement and data analytics, research methods, the sports industry, innovation processes, sustainability in product design, human factors in product design, robotics in sport and a major project.

During the summer, you may be given the exciting opportunity of a micro-placement project. These placements are arranged in collaboration with our existing industrial partners and alumni contacts and aim to provide you with hands-on practical experience, working on appealing projects relevant to your MSc.

Since undertaking my Sports Engineering master's degree, the horizons of opportunity have expanded significantly. The course doesn't exclusively revolve around sports applications; it offers a holistic educational experience.

What you'll study

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the students to understand the relationship between creative management, innovation and enterprise in a learning environment that provides the interactive methods and tools for individual and group success.

The aim of the module is to gain an appreciation of the size and complexity of the sports goods business, the implications of intellectual property, innovation, brand management, marketing, manufacturing, sustainability and life cycle analysis.

The aim of the module is to explain and assess the factors involved in measurement and data analysis to evaluate sports performers and sports equipment.

The aims of this module are:

  • To introduce the principles and approaches of research design, data collection and analysis.
  • To develop skills to critically review the literature and apply them to scientific and engineering problems.
  • To develop knowledge and understanding of data analysis techniques and their application.
  • To introduce the fundamental methods for designing and implementing your individual research program.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

Compulsory modules

The core aim of this module is to ensure students are able to take advantage of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to solve practical engineering problems. Towards that end the following aims are established:

  • Provide a base understanding of Machine Learning (ML) in the wider context of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Establish ML approaches and algorithms.
  • Explore ML techniques in practical engineering contexts.
  • Establish the challenges with ML in engineering
  • Deliver ML solutions in engineering, ensuring proficient use of essential tools for practical applications.

The aim of this module is for students to develop an understanding of recent and future applications of robotics with and for humans, with particular emphasis on sport and healthcare applications. The module will analyse several problems and what specific robotic solution are being developed for them, how the solutions are derived, what results are currently achieved and what the next challenges are.

The aim of the module is to gain an understanding of inclusive and sustainable product design methods and commercialisation, with an appreciation for patents and regulative constraints, on sports equipment.

This module aims to provide an understanding of the tools and techniques available to facilitate sustainable product design and provide knowledge of the product design processes that can reduce environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant science, technology, engineering or maths discipline. Applicants with alternative qualifications or with professional experience, but qualifications slightly below this level, will also be considered.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

On successful completion of our Sports Engineering MSc you will be able to:

  • understand the engineering of sports products, including aspects of innovative and inclusive product design, human factors and sustainability
  • apply practical engineering skills relevant to the research, design and development of sports products

Steph鈥檚 research interests are centred on sports surfaces, particularly artificial turf pitches. She works extensively with industry, and governing bodies such as FIFA, to drive innovation in pitch performance and environmental acceptability.

Andy Harland is a Professor of Sports Technology with interests related to balls, bats, footwear, apparel and protective gear. By recreating sports events in lab settings he seeks to better understand the features of product design that influence performance safety and comfort of athletes.

Aim茅e specialises in human factors research, using biomechanics to design sports equipment for women. Her projects include studying pregnant/postpartum women and designing women-specific golf equipment. She鈥檚 worked in research labs in Australia and Canada.

Rebecca develops measurement methods to understand human-product interaction. Her focus is on women in sport, measuring breast motion to reduce discomfort and increase sport participation. She works with sports brands, garment suppliers and clinicians, to ensure the output benefits women globally.

Lulu鈥檚 research centers on functional textiles and intelligent wearables. She focuses on developing wearable sensors integrated into clothing for real-time monitoring, additive printing for embedding electronics in fabrics and eco-friendly manufacturing techniques to reduce the environmental impact.
