Sport is a truly international and rapidly expanding industry that unites commercial, public and third-sector stakeholders. Our Sport Management MSc gives you the skills and knowledge to work in this exciting industry.

Our MSc in Sport Management is co-taught by the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (ranked 1st in the world for sport-related subjects, QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023) and 含羞草视频 Business School (a triple accredited UK business school).

Our MSc programme is a business and management degree, which accounts for nuances within the sport industry. Our teaching is informed by world-leading management and sport-related research and designed to develop your skills in sport marketing, policy and governance analysis, organisational management, finance and accounting. Students will also understand the key strategic challenges facing the sport ecosystem and the impact of sport on wider society.

Key study themes include: global sport marketing and media, sport policy governance and regulation, economics of innovation in the sport industry, management of human resources in the sport industry, research methods and skills for sport managers, accounting, strategic management, and more. You will also address topics such as professional sport marketing strategies, new sport policies, and the governance of sport federations.

Sport Management MSc covers a wide range of topics; to give you a taster, we have expanded on the core modules affiliated with this programme.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are for the students to:

  • develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the current issues related to the innovative process in sports economics
  • discuss public policy incentive used to promote innovation in a critically aware manner
  • apply analytical skills to evaluate the use intellectual property rights as part of firms strategies.

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • take ownership of their sport management-related personal learning and development, including building the skills required to successfully work in the sports industry
  • develop a critical appreciation of the professional skills needed to work within a variety of sporting ecosystems
  • develop knowledge of sport organisations' needs in the short-to-medium-term
    create their own body of evidence of their demonstration of sport management-related competencies.

The aim of this module is for students to critically examine the role of Human Resource Management within contemporary sports organisations and the wider global sports industry.

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • recognise and appraise the philosophical underpinnings of sport management research, and define how this affects the 'research design' journey;
  • critically appraise and demonstrate how different research designs generate knowledge in sport management;
  • differentiate and apply a range of approaches when summarising literature relevant to sport management;
  • reflect upon the differences between 'pure' and 'applied' research and their relevance to the topic under investigation;
  • critically analyse and interpret quantitative/qualitative data using appropriate software- and non-software-based tools/techniques;
  • acquire academic- and professional-based skills.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are for the students to:

  • show how financial information can support decisions;
  • provide participants with the knowledge for an understanding of the financial management of sport organisations;
  • develop numerical reasoning and the ability to interpret numerical information of a financial nature.

The aim of this module is to develop knowledge and understanding of the concepts of strategy and strategic management in relation to sport organisations, including the:

  • Importance of environmental analysis and strategic planning;
  • Strategic orientations of sports organisations and their strategic partners;
  • Sport organisations' portfolio management;
  • Coopetition;
  • Role of innovation and entrepreneurship within, and interfacing with, sport organisations.

The aim of this module is for students to develop a critical knowledge and understanding of:

  • concepts, theories, models of policy and of the policy-making process in sport
  • global governance structures and the strategic impact of good governance principles in sport organisations
  • the key frameworks underpinning the regulation of sport and its operation, and be able to apply the above in practice.

The aim of this module is for students to develop a systematic and critical understanding of global sport markets, from both a strategic marketing and media perspective, and to explore, access and critically evaluate the current practices in marketing, communications and the media within the global sport context, as well as the challenges they present in this rapidly changing environment.

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • take ownership of their sport management-related personal learning and development, including building the skills required to successfully work in the sports industry
  • develop a critical appreciation of the professional skills needed to work within a variety of sporting ecosystems
  • develop knowledge of sport organisations' needs in the short-to-medium-term

How you'll be assessed

Assessment for our MSc in Sport Management degree puts an emphasis on applied and practically-relevant assessments underpinned by academic rigour, allowing you to demonstrate your learning in a practical way.

A variety of assessment methods are used to cater to different learning styles. You will be assessed through exams, written coursework, presentations and group work, and a project (dissertation).

How you'll study

You will study through interactive lectures and seminars, giving you the opportunity to learn key concepts and skills, before having the opportunity to apply these in practice, debate and discussion in smaller groups, as well as through the professional development opportunities offered through our unique Coach and Volunteer Academy.

Groupwork is an important element of your study in this degree. You will have a group task in almost every module to develop your team working and intercultural communication skills, which are highly valued by sport industry employers throughout the world.

Your study will also have a component of independent study, including the need to read academic work (e.g., journal articles and books). You will also be expected to complement this learning through reading and watching professional sources (e.g., reading about recent sport management related events in the news) in order to prepare for your lectures and seminars.

Michael has an interest in sports management and marketing research. He is able to draw on experience from over 23 years in the sports management industry, including senior positions in the Greek Super League and organisations such as FIFA, UEFA and the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Organising Committee

Our master's in Sport Management graduates are known around the world for their engagement in the sport sector. Many of our graduates go on to work for professional sports teams, sport marketing and sponsorship agencies, and sport governing institutions (e.g., national and international sport governing bodies, and sport government departments).

Typical roles include sport marketing and sponsorship managers/executives, sport retail managers, sport and leisure consultants, national and international sport federation administrators and development officers, and event management and operations executives.
