Our MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology degree is designed and delivered to prepare you for career pathways in sport and exercise psychology.

The programme moves beyond the fundamentals of psychological science by focusing on significant areas in the applied contexts of sport and exercise while providing a critical understanding of sport and exercise psychology research and practice.

Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) through Accreditation Through Partnership, the programme is designed and delivered with a view to preparing students for practitioner career pathways or doctoral research in sport and exercise psychology and sport and exercise science, with a focus on psychology.

The programme is supported by a large group of sport and exercise psychology staff who conduct cutting-edge research in their areas of expertise. Several also work as practitioners with with national governing sport bodies, individual athletes and professional teams. Their expertise include: group dynamics and leadership; social identity in sport and performance; mental health and wellbeing in elite sport; the coach-athlete relationship; eating disorders in sport; exercise in the management of mental health; resistance to performance breakdown; and motivation.

The programme targets significant areas of sport and exercise psychology packaged in the following modules: Introductory Qualitative and Quantitative Research; Self-Regulation in Sport and Exercise; Performance Psychology and Management; Psychology of Exercise for Clinical Populations; Mental Health in Sport and Exercise; Professional Practice in Sport Psychology; The Psychology of the Coach-Athlete Relationship; as well as a research project.

Professional recognition

Our programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

To satisfy the accreditation requirements, you must achieve a minimum of 50% in all modules (180 credits) to graduate with an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology. If you do not meet this requirement but achieve a minimum of 50% in 150 credits and a minimum of 40% in the remaining 30 credits, you will graduate with the non-accredited exit award of MSc in Psychology of Sport and Exercise.

Upon gaining re-accreditation in 2020, the BPS commended the programme for the “breadth and depth of staff expertise across research, learning, teaching and applied practice in sport and exercise psychology”, as well as “the variety of innovative assessment methods incorporated within the programme which help students to integrate theory, research and practice, as well as equip them with a variety of core and transferable skills for any employment context and stage two training”.

The modules on our Sport and Exercise Psychology programme are designed to advance your knowledge and understanding of human psychology and their relationship with sport performance and exercise participation.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the student to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, interpret, and conduct quantitative research appropriate for their field and level of study.

The aim of this module is for the student to critically examine theory, research and practice in understanding self-regulation and associated developmental and interpersonal processes in sport and physical activity.

The aim of this module is to provide a world-leading learning experience of humans' mental and social processes and their relationship with fulfilling a specific task or function.

The aim of this module is to provide students with a critical understanding of the psychological and cultural principles that inform effective exercise promotion in clinical populations within community and healthcare settings.

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct and report on an original research study of an aspect of sport and exercise psychology.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • to gain a comprehensive and critical understanding of qualitative research design principles as applied to sport and exercise research;
  • to gain a critical understanding and appreciation of the philosophical, ethical and stakeholder issues which underpin qualitative research, and how this affects qualitative research design;
  • to critically review and communicate how different qualitative research designs inform understanding in sport and exercise research generally and in their particular field of study;
  • to gain a critical understanding of how to apply rigor checks in qualitative research;
  • to examine and analyse phenomena appropriately in accordance with research design.

The aims of this module are to examine and translate evidence relating to mental health and exercise in athlete and other populations.

The aims of this module are to:

  • to prepare students who are intending to pursue a professional qualification in sport psychology.
  • to provide students with practical knowledge and skill development opportunities related to the practice of applied sport psychology

The aims of this module are:

  • to provide students with theoretical underpinnings that revolve around the interpersonal dynamics between coaches and athletes
  • to provide students with practical knowledge and skills that aim to improve the quality of the coach-athlete relationship, increase better communication and decrease potential interpersonal conflict

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct and report on an original research study of an aspect of sport and exercise psychology.

Jamie鈥檚 main research interest is centred on: intervention effectiveness, group dynamics and leadership, and stress. His specific interests include, Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Social Identity in sport and performance settings, and mental health and wellbeing in elite and professional sport.

Anthony鈥檚 research employs qualitative methodologies as a means to understanding the life experiences of marginalised groups and clinical populations. His work covers eating disorders in sport, the role of exercise in mental illness and physical activity promotion for people with a disability.

Karl鈥檚 main research interest is in applied psychology and specifically the efficacy of interventions to accelerate expertise and to resist performance breakdown under perceived pressure. Karl also researches the development of psycho-social competencies in young people and professional practice.

Your future career

Our MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology degree is designed and delivered to prepare you for two specific career pathways:

Sport and exercise psychologist or scientist

Becoming a sport and exercise psychologist: You should contact the BPS about registering for the Stage 2 Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP), which typically involves two years full-time (up to four years part-time) training as a 'Trainee Sport and Exercise Psychologist'. Please be aware that the BPS requires trainees intending to register on the Stage 2 QSEP to have Graduate Status for Chartership (GBC). On successful completion of the BPS Stage 2 Qualification, you can apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for registration as a 'Sport and Exercise Psychologist'. You are encouraged to contact potential supervisors to enquire about opportunities and supervisory fees.

Becoming a sport and exercise scientist (specialising in psychology): Training to become a sport and exercise psychologist through the BASES Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR) typically requires two to four years of training under supervision. Depending on your first degree you may have to pass the Open University's 'Investigating Psychology 2' 60-credit module to qualify for training.

Academic: lecturer/professor

You should apply for a doctoral degree (PhD) in an area you are interested in. PhDs are typically three years of full-time study (up to five years part-time study) and in the UK, funded doctoral degrees are regularly advertised on our website, jobs.ac.uk and the BASES website. It is also possible to self-fund a doctoral degree - you are encouraged to identify topic areas you are interested in and contact potential supervisors to enquire about opportunities.

Graduate destinations

Graduates from this course have gone on to careers such as: sport and exercise psychologist, sport and exercise scientist, lecturer in sport and exercise psychology, and sport coach or exercise instructor/trainer. Other students have progressed to doctoral research in the field of sport and exercise psychology.

Graduates from the School have gone on to pursue roles in sport and exercise psychology within organisations such as the British Psychological Society, Brighton and Hove Albion FC, GiveSurf, Leicester Tigers, and the Ministry of Defence. Many graduates undertake Stage 2 training to become Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) accredited Sport and Exercise Psychology practitioners. Graduates have also secured positions at: Aston Villa FC, Bedworth Cricket Club, Decorum and Tring Athletics Club, Fulham FC Foundation, Help for Heroes, InnerDrive, International Tennis Federation, Leeds Gymnastics Club, Leicester City FC, Nottingham Forest FC and Scottish Borders Council.
