Our well-established MSc in Sport Biomechanics enables you to specialise in the physics of sport - the area of science concerned with the analysis of human movement.

Through the measurement and simulation of movement, the degree facilitates a greater understanding of human performance in sporting and recreational activities. This understanding can then be used to improve performance and reduce injury risk.

The programme contains cutting-edge content, ranging from experimental data collection, analysis techniques and equipment, through to the latest theoretical considerations and research problems.

Throughout the programme you will benefit from access to a large designated teaching laboratory and use key pieces of biomechanics equipment, including Vicon motion analysis systems, force plates, wireless electromyography (EMG), and isokinetic dynamometers.

Additionally, you will use the programming language MATLAB for data processing and analysis, as well as software for computer simulation and inertia modelling.

The programme culminates in an original research project, allowing you to apply the knowledge and expertise you have gained from the taught modules to independently collect and analyse data to answer a research question.

Successful completion of the programme will provide you with the essential knowledge, skills and experience for future employment in applied sport support, recreational and clinical biomechanics support services, biomechanics technology support and development, or to continue in academia as a researcher or a technician.

Before starting the programme

There is no requirement for you to undertake any work or reading. However, for those wanting to prepare, you may find it useful to read the book: Research Methods in Biomechanics and familarise yourself with the work of the Sports Biomechanics and Motor Control Research Group.

You can also prepare for the use of MATLAB programming language, by taking their free introductory ‘Onramp’ course.

Finally, a basic level of mathematical competence is essential for success on the programme; therefore you may wish to ensure you are familiar with the basics of: trigonometry, algebra and mechanics.

Our MSc Sport Biomechanics has been designed to develop your knowledge of the theoretical basis underpinning sports biomechanics analyses, while also providing you with all of the core data collection, processing and analysis techniques necessary to analyse and understand human motion.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the student to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, interpret, and conduct quantitative research appropriate for their field and level of study.

The aim of this module is for students to develop knowledge and understanding of orthopaedic sport biomechanics ranging from the epidemiology and anatomy, to the common injuries, their diagnostic methods, treatment, rehabilitation, and evaluation and implementation of clinical outcomes and prevention.

The aim of this module is for the student to apply classical mechanics to human motion and to develop the skills and understanding for 2D and 3D motion analysis to be able to collect, process, calculate, and interpret kinetic and kinematic data during dynamic sporting activities.

The aim of this module is for students to develop their skills and understanding of processing and analysing biomechanical data to appropriately answer a research question.

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of neuromuscular function from the level of the muscle contractile filaments, through to whole-body human function, encompassing skeletal muscle and tendinous tissues, neural control of muscle contraction and joint mechanics, whilst also gaining practical skills assessing human neuromuscular function.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through exams and various types of coursework, such as laboratory reports, computer code, simulation models, and finally a substantial thesis detailing the findings of your independent research project.

How you'll study

During semesters one and two, you will study via traditional lectures, allied with practical experimental and computer-based laboratory sessions.

Following this you will complete an independent research project, during which you will have the opportunity to collect data using the comprehensive suite of biomechanics equipment situated in several specialist biomechanics teaching and research labs. You will then analyse the data using the techniques you learned in the taught course to answer your research question and present your findings in a research report.

Our School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences is committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career.

  • You will develop essential practical experience with established equipment and software that is a key requirement for employment in applied biomechanics roles, including: 3D motion analysis (Vicon and Qualisys); force plates (Kistler, AMTI, Bertec); wearable sensors (IMU's); EMG; isometric and isokinetic dynamometers; and medical scans (MRI, ultrasound, DEXA).
  • You will learn and develop indispensable computer coding skills for solving complex biomechanical problems and managing large amounts of data, which is increasingly a desirable skill for employers.
  • Our Sport Biomechanics programme will develop your biomechanics-specific and transferable skills for employment, such as scientific writing, data analysis, presentation and interpretation, which will be beneficial for a wide range of potential careers. 
  • You also have the opportunity to attend events within the School, offering you the chance to broaden your horizons through a wide range of sport, exercise and health science-related topics.

Before starting the programme, there is no requirement for you to undertake any work or reading. However, for those wanting to prepare, you may find it useful to read the book: Research Methods in Biomechanics, and familarise yourself with the work of the Sports Biomechanics and Motor Control Research Group.

You can also prepare for the use of MATLAB programming language, by taking their free introductory ‘Onramp’ course. Finally, a basic level of mathematical competence is essential for success on the programme; therefore you may wish to ensure you are familiar with the basics of: trigonometry, algebra and mechanics.
