Renewable Energy Systems Technology
Qualification(s) available: MSc
Our Renewable Energy Systems Technology MSc is the UK’s longest established master's degree specialising in renewable and sustainable energy engineering.
Within this programme, you will develop the full range of knowledge and skills needed for a successful and effective career in the global renewable energy sector. Our highly skilled graduates are prized by industry, with many now holding senior positions in industry, commerce, government and NGOs.
The programme is designed and delivered by experts from the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST), the UK’s largest sustainable energy engineering research centre. At CREST, we have influential partnerships with industry, policymakers, and researchers across the world. All of our modules are taught by leading experts in the field, meaning the course offers the latest research and expertise in energy system sustainability.
Our industry-focused MSc will equip you with an advanced technical level of education in a range of renewable energy and supporting technologies. These include solar, wind, biomass, energy storage, and data analytics with an emphasis on integration into electricity networks in developed and developing countries. Furthermore, policy, investment, and environmental issues are examined to understand the wider context for renewable energy systems.
During the summer, you may be given the exciting opportunity of a micro-placement project. These placements are arranged in collaboration with our existing industrial partners and alumni contacts and aim to provide you with hands-on practical experience, working on appealing projects relevant to your MSc.
Why you should choose us
Why you should study this degree
- Most countries in the world now have net-zero targets, with electrical and heat energy supply systems a major focus. There is a significant need for more engineers with renewable energy skills.
- Our modules can be chosen allowing you to specialise in your interests, including options in specific technologies and in renewable energy project planning and management.
- Our teaching is informed by research carried out within the School.
- You will have access to some of the UK's best-equipped research facilities and the opportunity to work within a community of post-graduate researchers.
What you'll study
The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2024/25 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated Programme and Module Specifications are made available ahead of each academic year. Please also see Terms and Conditions of Study for more information.
This is a practical, industry-focused programme. It covers the technical principles and methods behind renewable energy production and distribution. It also covers economic, social and policy aspects involved in creating a low carbon energy future.
Compulsory modules
Renewable Energy Technologies, Economics and Policy (15 credits)
The aims of this module are:
- To explore the environmental, technical, political and socio-economic problems associated with world energy use.
- To examine policy and other strategic mechanisms designed to mitigate impacts to environmental and socio-economic systems thought to be caused by past and present energy extraction, processing and use.
Solar Power (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to introduce the facts governing the nature, availability and characteristics of the solar resources and the fundamental concepts of photovoltaics and solar thermal conversion. The conversion technologies are examined critically in terms of design, efficiency, manufacturing options and costs.
Wind Power (15 credits)
To enable students to contribute to the development and deployment of wind power, both onshore and offshore.
Water Power (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to equip students with the understanding and skills to assess the available energy resource and suitability of different turbine technologies for inland water power systems and for marine wave and tidal schemes.
Bioenergy (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to develop students' critical, informed knowledge of a broad range of biomass energy technologies including combustion and anaerobic digestion.
MSc Individual Project (60 credits)
The aims of this module are:
- To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
- To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
- To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.
Compulsory modules
Integration of Renewables (15 credits)
This module aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the electrical engineering associated with renewable-energy systems, and particularly the integration of renewable-energy systems into existing electrical power systems. It is primarily intended to equip designers rather than installers. The module presents internationally applicable principles rather than country-specific regulations and practices.
Optional modules (choose 3)
Energy Storage (10 credits)
The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the fundamentals of energy storage including hydrogen, thermal and electrochemical technologies and the integration of energy storage technologies into low carbon power systems.
Advanced Photovoltaics (10 credits)
The aims of this module is to enable students to develop specialist knowledge of solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, blending the fundamental underlying science with practical implementation. Students will be exposed to advanced knowledge of PV from current research into cell materials to the design, implementation and performance assessment of full systems. Techniques for characterisation and performance modelling will equip students with the skills to assess different PV technologies and optimise system designs. The module should be useful for those going on to technologist, designer or consultant roles in the field of PV or general renewable energies.
Renewable Energy for Development (10 credits)
The aims of this module is:
- To examine the role of renewable energy in meeting the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly ensuring access to modern energy with no one left behind.
- To evaluate different renewable energy systems in the context of RE4D
- To consider the challenges of ensuring sustainable development and sustainable business opportunities in RE4D
Data Analytics for Smart Energy Systems (10 credits)
The aims of this module are to:
- Introduce the main principles of diagnostic, predictive and operational analytics with relevance to the energy sector.
- Cover the key theoretical principles under-pinning big data analytics
- Utilise case studies to explore how stakeholders such as electricity system operators, utilities and aggregators can use data analytics to create clean, affordable, and flexible energy systems.
Energy System Economics, Markets, Policy and Risk (10 credits)
The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the factors which influence economic viability of renewable energy investments such as their intrinsic and operational performance, whole system and lifecycle cost analysis, and the energy markets and policy and regulatory contexts in which they operate. Sources of uncertainties and risk will be considered and practical financial analysis undertaken for energy system use cases.
