Our PGCE Physical Education programme provides practical professional preparation for teaching the 11-18 age range and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools across a number of local authorities.
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ has a strong tradition of educating and developing teachers. We have been consistently rated as an outstanding teacher education provider by Ofsted and our graduates are in great demand by schools and colleges in the UK and internationally.
The PGCE Physical Education programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and competences required to meet the Teachers’ Standards and achieve Qualified Teacher Status by the end of their training.
More specifically, it aims to develop knowledgeable, confident and reflective secondary school subject-specialist teachers capable of making a positive difference to the education and lives of young people.
The programme is full-time. Roughly two thirds of your time will be spent in schools where you will be supported by expert teachers to apply your knowledge to practice and develop your teaching competences. This will include extended placements in two different secondary schools alongside additional school-based experiences.
For the rest of the time, you will work at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ with specialist academics, tutors and teachers. Here, you will cover essential general and subject-specific content, as well as critique relevant theory, research and practice, enabling you to link theory and practice.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education programme carries 90 credits towards our full MSc in Education degree (180 credits).
Our MSc in Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status degree is offered on a part-time basis following the Postgraduate Certificate in Education year and provides another exciting professional development opportunity for early career teachers looking to further enhance their knowledge and future career prospects.

Our Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status programme is designed to produce well-qualified subject-specialist teachers for secondary schools, who engage in critical reflective practice to further develop their teaching and enhance pupil learning.
General Professional Studies in Secondary Education
This module will see you:
- develop a systematic knowledge and understanding of the wider professional requirements of teachers in secondary schools
- develop critical understanding and awareness of contemporary whole school issues informed by professional practice
- critically appraise policy and research related to the wider professional role of teachers.
The Reflective Physical Education Teacher
This module aims to:
- equip students with the fundamental knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to analyse and evaluate the connections and interdependencies between subject knowledge, teachers and teaching, learners and learning, and context and behaviour in secondary school physical education.
Physical Education Teaching in Context: School Placement 1
In your first extended placement, you will initially undertake a planned programme of observing and assisting experienced teachers designed to develop your confidence in working with pupils before gradually increasing the amount of teaching you do as your skills and confidence grow.
The aims of this module are for you to:
- begin to apply the general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills required of a specialist teacher of physical education in a secondary school to your teaching practice
- develop the basic teaching competences detailed within the Core Content Framework (DfE, 2019).
Developing as a Reflective Physical Education Teacher
This module aims to:
- equip you with more advanced knowledge, understanding and skills and further experiences and insights necessary to critically analyse and evaluate the connections and interdependencies between subject knowledge, teachers and teaching, learners and learning, and context and behaviour in secondary school physical education.
Embedding and Enhancing Physical Education Teaching in Context: School Placement 2
In your second extended placement, you will follow a similar pattern and planned programme during the early weeks and will gradually progress to experience the full responsibilities of a teacher.
This module will allow you to:
- develop the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of physical education in a secondary school;
- apply the general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills/competences detailed within Core Content Framework (DfE, 2019) required to meet the Teachers' Standards (DfE, 2011).

Entry requirements for United Kingdom
A 2:2 degree in a relevant subject (one in which a significant proportion of the content is Physical Education/Sports Science/Sport Pedagogy/Education related) awarded by a UK higher education provider or a recognised equivalent qualification.
GCSE grade 4 (C) or above Mathematics and English (or equivalents).
Please note: In accordance with the Department for Education ITT criteria for entry for initial teacher training, qualifications in key and functional skills at level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs. We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs or candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

The PGCE DfE apply system is very user friendly and there is no need to rush the completion of your application. That said, the PGCE programme at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is highly regarded, and places can fill quickly. Early application is therefore advised to avoid disappointment.
Early application will also mean that, if offered a place on the PGCE, you will have more time to satisfy all the conditions and checks required for entry into teacher training, thereby helping to ensure a smooth start to the programme. Applications typically close by July, and sooner if the course fills before this time.

On completion of this programme, you should be able to:
