Society鈥檚 need for pharmaceutical solutions to health problems ensures the demand for skilled individuals within this area remains high. Our MSc Pharmaceutical Science and Medicinal Chemistry is designed to meet the needs of industry and the UK science base by providing you with training in pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, drug synthesis, methods to identify potential drug targets and drug candidates, and methods to assess the biological activities of drug compounds.

The programme will give you the opportunity to specialise in this fascinating and vitally important field that focuses on the biochemistry, pharmacology, design, analysis and delivery of pharmaceutical substances, including the development of safe and effective drugs.

Throughout the programme your learning will be enhanced by the cutting-edge insights of our academic staff, many of whom are active in research, as well as by the outstanding facilities offered within our £17 million STEMLab and additional modern laboratories. As a student, you will enjoy access to a broad range of scientific instrumentation, including:

  • 400 MHz, 500 MHz, solid-state and benchtop NMR spectrometers
  • Single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers
  • A high resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer
  • GC-MS and linear ion trap LC-mass spectrometers
  • Ion mobility spectrometers
  • Gas and liquid chromatographs
  • Tunable nanopore sensors

You will also gain vital experience conducting a substantial research project, based either in an industry setting or working with a research group in the chemistry department.

The modules in our pharmaceutical science degree are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of the biochemistry, pharmacology, design, analysis and delivery of pharmaceutical substances, and to develop your research skills.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students experience of literature searching in specific chemical or environmental science areas.
  • To introduce students to the statistical evaluation of data in analytical science.
  • To offer students the opportunity to gain a range of transferable skills useful for personal and professional development.

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the processes involved in the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, the kinetic modelling of these processes, the test systems available and the application of this information to drug development.

The aims of this module are to further students knoweldge of the processes involved in the design and development of drugs, through case studies of drug discovery and development, discovery and evolution of synthetic routes. And to give students an appreciation of modern medicinal chemistry and molecular targets for drugs.

Optional modules

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of the methods and application of the principal analytical separation methods, including gas and liquid chromatography, and electrophoretic techniques.

The aim of this module is for the student to develop an understanding of the principles of molecular and elemental mass spectrometry, combined chromatography-mass spectrometry and and their applications in bioanalytical science and proteomics.

The aims of this module is for the student to:

  • Gain an understanding of the methods, components, and applications of select analytical technologies for in vitro biochemical and in vivo physiological measurement.
  • Compare and contrast the various sensing design elements
  • Critically appraise biosensors for laboratory and clinical environments, including characteristics such as sensitivity, selectivity and biocompatibility.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to make the student aware of the range of techniques available for analysis, characterization and structure determination of a range of inorganic and organic materials.

The aims of this module are for the student to develop professional and transferable skills appropriate to the working environment of a chemical scientist in a research & development role, and to use these skills to prepare a literature review and project plan.

Optional modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop in students an understanding of the processes leading to innovation in medicinal chemistry.
  • To introduce them to the methods of critical evaluation of the scientific literature in developing fields, and to develop advanced independent scholarship.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to provide experience of undertaking a research or development project managed according to modern industrial practice.

A 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chinese Medicine, Drug Analysis, Industrial Chemistry, Natural Sciences (providing enough Chemistry), Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Science, Toxicology. Other relevant backgrounds will be accepted providing there is sufficient Chemistry.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

Our Department of Chemistry is committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career.

The pharmaceutical science degree will equip you with essential and transferable skills such as communication and negotiation skills, both oral and written, which are useful in all industies. On successful completion of this degree you will be able to apply problem solving skills relating to qualitative information and also apply numeracy and computational skills including error analysis, order of magnitude estimations and modes of data presentation. You will be highly skilled in the lab and will be able to plan and execute all work in accordance with good health and safety practice.

You will have gained team working skills and will be able to resolve difficulties and conflicts when working with others.

Having used a variety of IT sources throughout your degree you will be able to use this to present results and ideas at a professional standard. You will also be gaining time management and organisation skills which are highly sought after by employers.

Your future career

Our pharmaceutical science degree provides training that is highly relevant to working in drug design and development in the pharmaceutical industry, the wider chemical industry and in other fields.
