This programme is designed to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing global market. It is aimed at graduates and engineering professionals wishing to develop advanced practical and computational skills in engineering science, design and technology.

This MSc will broaden and deepen your mechanical engineering knowledge, introducing you to new applications and practices, enabling you to develop the technical and transferable skills highly sought after by industry and academic research. 

During the summer, you may be given the exciting opportunity of a micro-placement project. These placements are arranged in collaboration with our existing industrial partners and alumni contacts and aim to provide you with hands-on practical experience, working on appealing projects relevant to your MSc.

Professional recognition

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), licensed by the UK Engineering Council.

An accredited one year master’s degree in engineering, when combined with an accredited BEng degree, fulfils the academic requirements to become professionally registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Further details are available here.

The modules on our Mechanical Engineering MSc programme are taught by leading experts in the field and content is directly informed by the latest industry advancements and our research expertise.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the students to understand the relationship between creative management, innovation and enterprise in a learning environment that provides the interactive methods and tools for individual and group success.

The aims of the module are to gain an understanding of modern concepts of structural analysis. To gain practical experience in analyses of structures using finite-element modelling.

This module aims to enable students to evaluate, choose and implement CAE systems.

The aims of this module are to provide students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

The aims of this module is to provide students with a working understanding of some of the main methods which may be employed in the design of products and systems.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to introduce students to the concepts in numerical simulation of advanced materials and processes. To enable students to gain theoretical and practical experience in simulating mechanical behaviour of advanced materials and modelling processes related to these materials using finite element modelling techniques.

The aims of the module are

  • To study the fundamentals of combustion processes and understand key aspects relating to performance and emissions.
  • To develop knowledge and skills required by engineers entering industries involved in the design and use of combustion equipment.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

Optional modules (choose one)

The aims of this module are to introduce the following elements: experimental techniques for analysis and characterization of various engineering materials; full-field, non-contact optical methods for deformation and strain measurements.

The aim of the module is to enable students to understand, apply and evaluate the advanced concepts of dynamics and develop complementary practical skills in measuring and simulating dynamic systems representative of problems in related industries.

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant science, technology, engineering or maths discipline.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Ramin specialises in Tribology and Dynamics, focusing on improving energy efficiency and NVH performance of propulsion systems. He has experience in conducting research and consultancy for a multitude of global industrial partners including Castrol, Caterpillar, DENSO, JCB, and Mercedes F1.

Professor of Computational Fluid and Solid Dynamics and Head of the Wolfson School Solid and Fluid Mechanics research unit.

Joanna specialises in numerical methods and advanced scientific simulations. Her collaborations with the European Centre for medium-range weather forecast in Colorado have resulted in novel numerical weather prediction methodologies. Her industrial experience includes Airbus and ATG Group.
