Our Mathematics PGCE programme provides practical professional preparation for teaching the 11-18 age range and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools across a number of local authorities.

含羞草视频 has a strong tradition of educating and developing teachers. We have been consistently rated as an outstanding teacher education provider by Ofsted and our graduates are in great demand by schools and colleges in the UK and internationally.

The Mathematics PGCE programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and competences required to meet the Teachers’ Standards and achieve Qualified Teacher Status by the end of their training.

More specifically, it aims to develop knowledgeable, confident and reflective secondary school subject-specialist teachers capable of making a positive difference to the education and lives of young people. 

The programme is full-time. Roughly two thirds of your time will be spent in schools where you will be supported by expert teachers to apply your knowledge to practice and develop your teaching competences. This will include extended placements in two different secondary schools alongside additional school-based experiences.

For the rest of the time, you will work at 含羞草视频 with specialist academics, tutors and teachers. Here, you will cover essential general and subject-specific content, as well as critique relevant theory, research and practice, enabling you to link theory and practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education programme carries 90 credits towards our full MSc in Education degree (180 credits).

Our MSc in Mathematics with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is offered on a part-time basis following the Postgraduate Certificate in Education year and provides another exciting professional development opportunity for early career teachers looking to further enhance their knowledge and future career prospects.

This module will see you:

  • develop a systematic knowledge and understanding of the wider professional requirements of teachers in secondary schools
  • develop critical understanding and awareness of contemporary whole school issues informed by professional practice
  • critically appraise policy and research related to the wider professional role of teachers.

The aims of this module are to equip students with the fundamental knowledge, understanding and skills and initial experiences necessary to analyse and evaluate the connections and interdependencies between subject knowledge, teachers and teaching, learners and learning, and context and behaviour in secondary school mathematics.

In your first extended placement, you will initially undertake a planned programme of observing and assisting experienced teachers designed to develop your confidence in working with pupils before gradually increasing the amount of teaching you do as your skills and confidence grow.

The aims of this module will be for students to begin to apply the general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills required of a specialist teacher of mathematics in a secondary school to their teaching practice; and develop the basic teaching competences detailed within the Core Content Framework (DfE, 2019).

The aims of this module are to equip students with more advanced knowledge, understanding and skills and further experiences and insights necessary to critically analyse and evaluate the connections and interdependencies between subject knowledge, teachers and teaching, learners and learning, and context and behaviour in secondary school mathematics.

In your second extended placement, you will follow a similar pattern and planned programme during the early weeks and will gradually progress to experience the full responsibilities of a teacher.

The aims of this module will be for students to develop the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of mathematics in a secondary school; and apply the general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills/competences detailed within Core Content Framework (DfE, 2019) required to meet the Teachers' Standards (DfE, 2011).

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

The PGCE DfE apply system is very user friendly and there is no need to rush the completion of your application. That said, the PGCE programme at 含羞草视频 is highly regarded, and places can fill quickly. Early application is therefore advised to avoid disappointment.

Early application will also mean that, if offered a place on the PGCE, you will have more time to satisfy all the conditions and checks required for entry into teacher training, thereby helping to ensure a smooth start to the programme. Applications typically close by July, and sooner if the course fills before this time.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third class or above), or equivalent.

The degree should be one in which a significant proportion of the content is mathematics.

We will consider candidates from other degree routes (for example, psychology) but a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course may be required before the start of the PGCE. We will discuss this with you at your interview.

A level mathematics (or equivalent)

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We will consider candidates with pending GCSEs. We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Your development

Our Department of Mathematics Education has and international reputation for research into mathematics education and is one of the largest groups of mathematics education researchers in the UK.

We prepare our future teachers to engage and motivate school students to be mathematical thinkers and not just learners of items in a mathematics curriculum. Our course will help you to:

  • Learn how to teach and relate to young people in a variety of learning situations
  • Develop the ability to plan sequences of lessons, and to teach and manage pupils effectively
  • Gain the confidence and competence to undertake your full role as a teacher within a secondary school
  • Develop sufficient knowledge and understanding of educational issues to be able to contribute effectively to the highest standards of teaching and learning, and to whole school improvement.

Your future career

Our trainee teachers are encouraged to be reflective and develop their own style of teaching mathematics, meaning that they are often sought after by employers, with many gaining jobs within our partnership schools.

Our student teachers are highly sought after with most going onto have successful teaching careers in many different schools throughout the UK as well as overseas.
