Our Engineering Design MSc is a unique course that combines aesthetics and form of industrial design with the functionality, structural integrity and reliability of engineering. Our programme enables you to work effectively and successfully in an engineering design role, whether it concerns the design of products, processes or systems.

A balance of theory and practice is applied to the solving of real engineering design problems and all projects meet the product design requirements of one of our many cooperating companies.

The programme is devised to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing global market; the availability of well-designed products, processes and systems is the foundation of successful commercial enterprises. You will develop the technical and transferable skills highly sought after by industry and academic research.

During the summer, you may be given the exciting opportunity of a micro-placement project. These placements are arranged in collaboration with our existing industrial partners and alumni contacts and aim to provide you with hands-on practical experience, working on appealing projects relevant to your MSc.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the students to understand the relationship between creative management, innovation and enterprise in a learning environment that provides the interactive methods and tools for individual and group success.

The aims of the module are to gain an understanding of modern concepts of structural analysis. To gain practical experience in analyses of structures using finite-element modelling.

This module aims to enable students to evaluate, choose and implement CAE systems.

The aims of this module are to provide students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

The aims of this module is to provide students with a working understanding of some of the main methods which may be employed in the design of products and systems.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

Compulsory modules

The aim of the module is to introduce the basic concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company.

The aims of this module is

  • to provide an understanding of the roles, methods and skills of product designers and ergonomists in order to facilitate working in interdisciplinary design teams.
  • to provide a basis for the further development of students' own skills in product design.

This module aims to provide an understanding of the tools and techniques available to facilitate sustainable product design and provide knowledge of the product design processes that can reduce environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices.

The aims of this module are:

  • To give students an opportunity to conduct a research and/or development project on a topic of relevance to their specific programme of study.
  • To provide students with the key skills and experience needed to plan, manage and deliver a complex extended project.
  • To prepare students for future employment and professional practice in a relevant engineering sector at an advanced technical or managerial level.

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant science, technology, engineering or maths discipline.

Applicants with qualifications slightly below this level, alternative qualifications and/or professional experience will also be considered.

The University will consider students from Affiliated Colleges in the following way:

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from a small number of Chinese universities that specialise in business, management, finance or creative arts will be given special consideration by the University. The full list of these universities and the Shanghai band under which they will be considered can be found below:

Paul is a Senior Lecturer with industrial experience with expertise in design and experimental methods applied for vehicle and powertrain applications. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, teaching design based subjects to postgraduate and final year undergraduate students.

Darren is a teaching focused academic, specialising in CAD and CAE at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has interests in CAM, 3D Printing and Reverse Engineering. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is also Director of Professional Training.

Lecturer in Engineering Design and Module Leader for Product Design and Human Factors

Ian's 20-year research career spans three academic schools and international R&D projects in generative CAD, digital manufacturing, remanufacturing systems, and design support. He specialises in teaching product design group projects and CAD for product visualisation.

Your future career

The School maintains strong links within the sector and students will have opportunities to visit various industries during their studies in addition to parts of certain modules being delivered by industrial experts. Our graduates are highly employable and work all over the world in various sectors.

Graduates are well qualified to take on various roles and have gone on to be design and project engineers and product designers in various companies including Chargebox, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB and Network Rail to name a few.

A number of graduates have progressed on to further study.
