Our Construction Project Management MSc programme is suitable for those who wish to gain all the essential technical insights into managing projects. It delivers core technical project management expertise while providing a holistic perspective upon construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering is one of four Royal Academy of Engineering Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design, and one of the most highly funded built environment groups by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The School hosts the National Facility for Infrastructure Construction (N-FIC), funded by the UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure & Cities (UKCRIC). We also house Building and Industrial Services Pipework Academy (BISPA), which is a collaboration with global steel manufacturer Tata Steel and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). This uniquely holistic view of construction makes it best placed for developing graduates that meet the increasing demands of the sector.

This programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

The Joint Board of Moderators includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Permanent Way Institution and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. The accreditation is on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.* For further information, please visit JBM.

The modules on our Construction Project Management MSc programme are designed to deliver a high quality educational experience that develops and sustains your knowledge, skills and aspirations in the further advancement of your career within the construction industry.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are for the student to become familiar with and comprehend the wide range of research methods and skills needed to investigate, understand, communicate and execute a research project.

The aims of the module is to introduce managers to fundamental BIM principles and present wide range of BIM tools and technologies.

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of construction project management principles and techniques.

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of the principles of design management and techniques for cost and value management.

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • understand the principles and practice of sustainability issues as they relate to the built environment and its many stakeholders;
  • appreciate the application of a building sustainability assessment scheme; and
  • work towards becoming a BREEAM Accredited Graduate.

The aims of the module are to develop students' knowledge of leading contemporary management concepts and innovations and how these contribute to successful construction projects, including the management of risk and construction logistics.

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.

Optional modules (choose one)

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector.

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the range of techniques and strategies for managing people and teams within the context of the construction sector, and to provide students with the opportunity to apply this knowledge within individual and team-based exercises as well as an outdoor management course.

The early part of the module is a unique combination of developing and deepening students understanding of their own management competencies, theoretical grasp of theory (leadership, teamwork, motivation, power) and communication) and a fantastic opportunity to engage in experiential learning over three very challenging, problem solving days within an outdoor environment. Developing and then combining knowledge of management competencies, theory and practice with the opportunity to experience and self-reflect upon their connections is unique within this module. The latter half of the module then deepend students grasp of organisation theory by exploring and critically analysing theories of culture, HRM and change.

The aim of the module is to develop students' understanding of construction law, procurement and contract management practice.

The aim of this module is to provide a project based learning experience that exposes students to cross-disciplinary, globally distributed teamwork focused on system integration of architecture-structural engineering-construction management-HVAC-life cycle financial management across time, space, culture, and technology.

The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated (Level 2) models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for creation and collaboration of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The theories of group working; workspace awareness and shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
