Our MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology will equip you with the knowledge and skills to promote the prescription of exercise, both as a preventative measure and as a treatment/therapy.

As the crucial role of exercise and physical activity in the treatment of diseases and medical conditions is increasingly understood, health practitioners are encouraged to consider exercise prescriptions when designing treatment plans and health interventions.

Just as the exercise medicine global health initiative continues to grow, so do the opportunities for well-qualified individuals with an understanding of research in this area.

Formerly known as the MSc in Exercise as Medicine, the MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology degree has been developed in response to this trend, drawing on 含羞草视频's internationally recognised research on physical activity and health.

The programme is aimed at individuals with a background in exercise science and/or physical activity who wish to enhance their scientific knowledge and skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise, particularly for patients with hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary, renal and cardiac conditions, or those at risk of metabolic syndrome.

This MSc will therefore educate a new, highly skilled group of allied health professionals with the ability to work alongside clinicians and practitioners to manage the epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions.

Based in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands, you will be taught in high quality teaching environments and have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, designed to facilitate the transfer of cutting-edge research to front-line support and care.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the student to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, interpret, and conduct quantitative research appropriate for their field and level of study.

The aims of this module are to:

  • to prepare students for practising and future pursuit of a professional qualification in the field of Clinical Exercise Physiology
  • to provide students with the knowledge, skills and opportunities related to the practice of applied Clinical Exercise Physiology

The aims of this module are to:

  1. To review the anatomy & physiology of apparently healthy individuals
  2. Recognise and critically discuss the risk factors and pathogenesis of disease and long term conditions
  3. Recognise and critically discuss direct & indirect impacts of diseases/conditions on health / physical function / quality of life / longevity
  4. Explain the importance, value and processes involved in various diagnostic procedures, clinical management, and patient pathways
  5. Identify and explain the indications for and contraindications to exercise, pharmaceuticals, and diet/nutrition
  6. Identify and explain the impact of pathophysiology (and therapy) on acute and chronic exercise response.

The aims of this module are for students to develop knowledge and competency in a wide range of behavioural and physiological phenotype measurements including physical activity, sedentary behaviour, health, and fitness and to prepare students to undertake laboratory-based research/enterprise in exercise medicine

Based in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine 鈥� East Midlands, you will be taught in high quality teaching environments and have access to state-of-the-art laboratories designed to facilitate the transfer of cutting-edge research to front-line support and care. You will be exposed to a range of specialist equipment and technology to facilitate your development.

The NCSEM is an Olympic legacy project delivering education, research and clinical services in sport, exercise and physical activity. It aims to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.

A wide range of high quality research takes place within the NCSEM-EM, which is then translated into teaching and training through its educational programmes. There is also a range of clinical services offered including sport and exercise medicine, orthopaedics, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, as well as diagnostic facilities including a 3T MRI scanner.

NCSEM activity covers the following themes: physical activity in disease prevention; exercise in chronic disease; sports injuries and musculoskeletal health; mental health and wellbeing; and performance health.

Your development

Throughout the programme you will develop an understanding of current health and exercise recommendations, as well as the ways in which exercise impacts on health and wellbeing. The programme will also:

  • Develop your professional practice: including improved patient interaction and an understanding of good clinical practice, healthcare ethics and informed consent
  • Build your understanding of exercise preparticipation health screening: with a focus on medical history, blood pressure and pulmonary function
  • Provide you with expertise in delivering health-related physical fitness testing: providing you with an understanding of body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular fitness
  • Give you an understanding of the principles, interpretation, creation and communication of exercise prescription, including strategies for promoting exercise.

Dr Pearson specialises in behavioural epidemiology with a focus on nutrition, eating behaviours, physical activity and sedentary behaviours of children and adolescents. Dr Pearson co-leads the Physical Activity Epidemiology module on the Clinical Exercise Physiology programme.

Keith is a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Director of the International Confederation of Sport and Exercise Practice. His research is in paediatric exercise, health and performance; he also has extensive experience of quantitative statistics and research design.

This programme is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to work alongside clinicians, practitioners and policymakers in the management of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions.

Graduate destinations include, among others, various clinical exercise physiology and cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation roles (e.g., NHS, BUPA, Nuffield Health) and a number of funded exercise and health-oriented PhD studentships.
