Develop the modelling and consulting skills needed to understand, manage and communicate insights from big data on this immersive, full-time master’s in Business Analytics.

Often referred to as the oil of the 21st Century, business analytics is an area that is critical to business and organisational success. It is a rapidly developing field with a shortage of specialists – making it ripe with career opportunities.

Join us on this interactive master’s to develop a firm grounding in key modelling skills and managing data sets of all sizes. You will get to grips with managerial decision making, delivering consultancy projects and using analytics to understand customers and improve business operations.

Importantly, you will also learn to communicate and present your findings and recommendations to stakeholders across a business – a skill that will make you invaluable as an analytics expert.

Put your skills into practice during the final term on a supervised consulting or research project with organisations such as npower, Dstl and Defra. It is a chance to apply powerful tools such as data mining, forecasting, optimisation, simulation and decision analysis to a particular area of business or policy you are interested in.

By the end of your time with us, you will be armed with a sought-after mix of modelling, consultancy and communication skills – ready to excel as a management consultant, business analyst, policy analyst, marketing researcher, operations researcher, or in other data scientist roles.

Compulsory modules

Discovery Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • To provide students with an in-depth understanding of the principles of data analysis in the context of analytics and management science problems.
  • To enable students to develop numerical reasoning, analytical skills and competency to apply a range of statistical models to datasets and interpret their results.
  • To provide students with practical experience of analysing real world datasets using analytics software tools such as SAS or equivalent.
  • To provide a firm basis for the Customer Analytics module in semester 2.

Decision Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to provide an understanding of the techniques and tools used to model and support management decisions;
  • to develop skills in analysing and modelling management situations and in applying the models, methods and computer software to address the decision problems faced;
  • to develop the ability of interpreting and analysing solution results and computer software outputs in the business and management context.

Policy and Strategy Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to demonstrate an understanding of the role of analytics in informing strategy and policy in the public and private sectors;
  • to apply appropriate frameworks for policy and strategy analytics;
  • to develop skills in analytical methods for policy and strategy analysis;
  • to be able to apply these skills to real world problems including external project work.

Process and Programming for Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to understand various processes involved in big data analytics
  • to understand and experience python and other programming approaches to big data
  • to develop a critical and practical appreciation of activities and factors involved in organising big data analytics initiatives and projects
  • to understand the skills and capabilities required for leading big data analytics applications
  • to build the project management skills required for successful leadership of big data analytics initiatives and projects.

Compulsory modules

Managing Big Data (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop a critical appreciation of the theory and practice of managing big data and its significance for business in the global environment
  • to develop an awareness of the skills required for managing big data in different sectors
  • to understand how big data can be used to address real world issues
  • to understand how business opportunities can be identified and exploited using big data and big data analytics
  • to explore the range of software tools available for managing large data sets.

Operations Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce some common types of operations planning problems and their applications;
  • to develop skills in applying optimisation, simulation and other analytics techniques to model and solve these problems.

Leadership and Project Management (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of how to manage projects and their risks for both the individual managing their own and for the team leader managing a larger-scale project. The emphasis is on getting a quality product or service delivered on time and within budget.

Ethics and the Trust Economy (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • Understand and critically review the societal and ethical issues associated with the digital technologies in the 21st century. Understand the minimum legal standard required and also consider higher standards that reflect societal moral operating principles. Consider a holistic view from the differing perspectives of citizens, individuals, parents, employees, employers and leaders.
  • Understand the basics of bias and its impact on ethical decision making.
  • Understand the elements that build trust, how these are measured and their impact both societally and economically.
  • Understand the basic concepts of data ethics and its application.
  • Understand the impact of cultural differences in a globally connected society.
  • Apply multidisciplinary concepts including diversity, equality, inclusion, critical thinking, reflection to construct, articulate and communicate ethical purpose from a leadership perspective.
  • Be able to rationalise personal thinking, decision making and reaction (from an understanding of bias).
  • Create an ethical framework that could be applied for leadership development. Apply data ethics in design, accounting for cultural difference.
  • Encourage critical thinking, personal reflection.
  • Work and collaborate in a diverse team.
  • Articulate a critical analysis of the ethical standards required by senior leaders in today's society.
  • Encourage a holistic approach when dealing with the complexity of a digitally connected global society.

Analytics Project (60 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop a working knowledge of the processes required for the conduct of analytics projects in applied or research contexts;
  • to give students the experience of executing an analytics project to tackle a practical or theoretical problem;
  • to integrate the learning from the taught Business Analytics programme into this problem solving context.

Modules are assessed through either coursework only or a combination of exam and coursework. For the modules assessed by exam and coursework, the typical weight for exam is 50% or 75%.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A good honours degree in a quantitative subject, such as engineering, mathematics, physics, psychology, economics, business and management is particularly welcomed.

Applicants from other disciplines may be considered on a case-by-case basis provided that they can show strong quantitative ability. GRE or GMAT scores may be requested to verify numeracy skills.

Work experience will be considered for applicants who do not hold a first degree.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
