Originally created with Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover, our Automotive Engineering MSc will provide you with the knowledge and technical expertise for a career in the fast-paced automotive sector. You'll specialise in subjects that are relevant to a rapidly changing industry and the future of ground transportation to provide you with solid expertise for your future career.

The programme will build on your existing engineering skills and enhance your understanding of the latest automotive technologies, including the development of the next generation of vehicles that feature new hardware, software, autonomy and electrification. Practical activities are integral to our course, for example, by spending time at HORIBA MIRA proving ground you'll learn how to collect and analyse vehicle handling, off-road dynamics, noise measurement, braking performance and wet weather driving data.

We have a strong and growing research programme with world-class activities and facilities. Our research topics include the development of new design methodologies for hybrid powertrains, vehicle electrification and autonomy, virtual vehicle integration and development and vehicle aerodynamics simulation and testing. In your project modules, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to these research areas.

Professional recognition

Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). The programme also meets the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Our Automotive Engineering MSc is designed to provide a sound education in advanced topics of relevance to the rapidly changing automotive sector, such as sustainable vehicle powertrains, vehicle electrification, autonomy and embedded intelligence, and vehicle aerodynamics.

Compulsory modules

The aim of the project is to develop the skills required to perform research tasks involving the application of scientific and engineering principles in areas related to the composition, manufacture and performance of materials and related products.

The aims of this module are:
To provide an introduction on essential programming skills for engineering and automotive engineering within the Matlab/Simulink and the Python environments.
To provide the student with the capacity to transfer engineering and automotive engineering problems into working computer code and obtain and interpret results from the simulations.

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce key aspects of the systems engineering approach to vehicle engineering
  • develop these aspects within the context of vehicle straight-line performance
  • introduce the underlying principles of the powertrain system modelling
  • understand the construction, design, technology and performance parameters of automotive hybrid electric powertrains
  • develop supporting engineering principles and analysis tools.

Optional modules (select three)

The aims of this module are:

  • To introduce the constructions, function, and performance of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives in a mobile application context.
  • To appreciate the opportunities, the engineering choices, and the trade-offs inherent in the application of complex electric machines.

The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of vehicle dynamics concepts, from the fundamentals of vehicle handling, through to development of simple and more complex vehicle handling models. The module also examines core areas of tyres, suspension and steering, and introduces motorcycle modelling. Students will also experience objective testing on a vehicle proving ground.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the student to carry out background research, preparatory work, planning, and preliminary investigations to support the completion of the automotive project module in semester 3.

The aim of this module is to develop understanding of technology for low emission and zero emission automotive powertrain systems.

Optional modules (select three)

This module considers the latest design issues in car body engineering. The fundamentals of several related topics are introduced, including: vehicle loading; advanced mechanics of stress and strain analysis; crash structure, failure and crash impact response, and biomechanical tolerance of humans to crash forces; advanced finite element method (FEM) techniques including for nonlinear and dynamic transient analyses, and the use of specialist commercial FEM software such as Marc Mentat; and fatigue and fracture analysis.

The aims of this module are to provide an overview of autonomous vehicle systems and to familiarise the student with autonomous vehicle control methods, sensor fusion techniques, autonomous path planning/following algorithms and basic autonomous functions.

The aims of this module are to introduce key aspects of the aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics and applications in relation to their application in the automotive industry.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to give experience of managing and conducting a substantial research project.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in Engineering or Physical Sciences. Required modules include Mathematics, Dynamics, Structures, Fluids, Thermodynamics.

Applicants with a 2:2 (or equivalent) may be considered with relevant experience in the automotive industry.
