Student finance - maintenance loans
UK funded students continue to be eligible for maintenance loans during international study exchanges under the Turing Scheme. Work placements under the Turing Scheme are not assessed as sandwich placements for Student Finance funding purposes. Funding from Student Finance England can continue on a similar basis to a normal study year, calculated with reference to household income but at a higher overseas rate.
The table below gives an indication of undergraduate living costs loan entitlement for a full-year exchange in the academic year 2023/24, assuming that you joined the University in 2016 or thereafter, funded by Student Finance England. Please note that funding for students from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales is not included.
Household Income | Non-Final Year Maintenance Loan | Final Year Maintenance Loan |
---|---|---|
£25,000 | £11,427 | £10,299 |
£35,000 | £9,986 | £8,788 |
£45,000 | £8,545 | £7,347 |
£55,000 | £7,104 | £5,906 |
£62,678 or higher* | - | £4,800 |
£65,967 or higher** | £5,524 | £4,800 |
*For Final year students, the loan rate is fixed at £4,800 for all income levels above £62,678.
** For Non-Final year students, the loan rate is fixed at £5,524 for all income levels above £65,967.
In order to ensure that you are correctly assessed by Student Finance, your º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ student record needs to be correct. If you are adding a sandwich/placement year to your degree programme, you can submit a request to change route through the Student Self-Service facilities. Further information about submitting such requests can be found on the Placement page by the Careers Network.
If Student Finance require a letter from the University confirming the details, dates and location of your international study exchange or work placement under the Turing Scheme this can be requested by emailing exchanges@lboro.ac.uk.
The University will confirm your details with Student Finance when you re-register at the start of the academic year (October). Your student loan will NOT normally be released before the start of the academic year. Please make sure that you budget accordingly if your placement begins BEFORE October.
If you feel that you have been incorrectly assessed by Student Finance England, you can ask to be re-assessed. If you have any questions regarding your funding or are considering appealing, you are advised to contact the Student Advice and Support Service (advice@lboro.ac.uk) in the first instance.

Funding for international exchanges
