Frank Carter Memorial Award
Two prizes, to the value of £400 each, will be made to enable students with good performances in the first two years of a language programme to take approved programmes of vacation study in a foreign country.
Frank Carter was a co-founder of the Department of European Studies and later Professor of Modern Languages until his death in 1981. He graduated in German from Birmingham University and, after a short career as a school teacher, joined º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ before it was awarded its University Charter as a member of the then Department of Liberal Studies.
The memorial prize was established originally to help students of promise from less privileged backgrounds to travel abroad for linguistic experience. It is now open to all students of foreign languages at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
