What we mean by adverse personal and family circumstances
Adverse personal and family circumstances refers to circumstances outside of your control that has an unfavourable impact on you directly or indirectly through the impact on a close relation. Such circumstances might include but are not limited to:
- Serious illness of a close relation
- A long-term relationship breakdown, such as a marriage
- Sudden or unanticipated caring responsibilities
- Exposure to a difficult or challenging home environment
What support is available to you
The University has a range of different services to support you with your circumstances. Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity and the University Counselling Service are available to all students and offers an opportunity to talk and reflect with a professionally trained person who is outside your immediate situation.
Should you submit a Mitigating Circumstances claim
If you have experienced adverse personal or family circumstance(s) like those listed above that has negatively impacted your academic performance, then please submit a Mitigating Circumstance (MC) claim following your assessment(s).
What your Mitigating Circumstances claim for adverse personal or family circumstances should include
- As much detail as possible on your adverse personal or family circumstances including dates of impact.
- A full explanation outlining how your circumstance(s) has impacted your academic performance in your assessment(s).
- Which assessment(s) were impacted by the circumstances outlined in your claim by selecting the relevant components on the online form.
- If you can provide evidence that will verify and support your claim, you should include this. However, we recognise that it can be challenging to gather evidence for some claims so please submit your claim anyway.
