º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Rugby prides itself on providing numerous opportunities in Rugby outside of playing, and each season we offer both students and non-students the chance to get involved with all levels of our programme.

These roles are at the heart of our workforce and the opportunity to develop here is unrivalled.  Coaching and Performance Support opportunities are all well established with support from world leading practitioners. The range of opportunities also includes roles within Refereeing, Team Management & Media. The experience you will gain is industry-relevant and will prepare you to go on and make a future impact in the game.

Coach

Each season º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Rugby has opportunities for enthusiastic and committed individuals to coach with the following teams:

  • Men’s BUCS 2-5
  • Women’s BUCS 1-3
  • IMS & Super Series

We are looking for coaches who:

  • Have previous experience in playing or coaching within the game
  • Are enthusiastic about supporting and challenging a talented group of players
  • A level 2 coaching qualification is preferable for however is not compulsory (students can access a Level 2 course via the Coach & Volunteer Academy)

There are no direct minimum requirements, however attendance at matches and training sessions are central to the roles with varying weekly commitments depending on the team.

Officiating

Officiating is a great way to learn leadership and communication skills and acquire sport specific knowledge. Here at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ there is the chance to gain a nationally recognised officiating qualification free of charge (conditions apply), and gain experience by refereeing on the IMS and Super Series Programmes that run from October to April. We also have a strong relationship with the Leciestershire Society of Rugby Union Referees, providing a link to the Community game.

Team Manager

The role of the Team Manager is integral to the smooth running of game day. Working with the coaches the Team Manger helps to manage the game day process, travel and equipment, enabling the players to focus primarily on competing.

Duties and responsiblities of this role involve:

  • In line with the head coach assist with player communication around availability and match day logistics
  • Liaise with and greet referees on game day directing them to changing rooms and agree timings
  • Liaise and greet away teams and explain location of changing rooms, pitch etc
  • Liaise with bus driver around travel logistics when playing away from home
  • Responsible for the collection and return of equipment on game day (match shirts, balls, cones, first aid kit and tackle bags)
  • Lead on completion of match day paperwork and return to Programme Manager
  • Responsible for all timings in the lead up to kick-off
  • Assist with the changing room setup and manage players leaving facility to the standard expected of º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Rugby

To be a Team Manager with º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Rugby you need to be:

  • Available for the majority of Wednesdays across the BUCS Calendar (October-March), including both home and away matches
  • Confident with the ability to speak to large groups of people
  • Able to meet deadlines and a good timekeeper
  • Protactive and understand when others might need assistance
  • Highly organised and can prioritise tasks
  • Knowledgable of Rugby Union (preferable but not essential)

In return for volunteering your time we believe that you will:

  • Gain practical experience of managing a sporting team through a competitive league season
  • Have clear ownership of an area of work with the ability to drive and shape the role as you see fit
  • Be involved and integrated within a thriving rugby environment
  • Have the opportunity for CPD from professional staff, both internal and external to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, in the field of professional sport administration and operations management
  • Have the opportunity to progress onto a full-time placement role in operations support, if succesful in the position

Performance Analysis

Our team works closely with our coaches and athletes in the provision of performance analysis support. This includes the collection and analysis of video and data to inform the review and preview process carried out by our coaches/players. This is supported further by the production of statistical material and provision of longitudinal analysis across the season to provide a measurable to our performance. The analysis team plays a large part in the way this data is visualised, assisting the coaching team in delivering presentations, playbook and other material in a visually compelling way.
 
Every year we take on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students to assist in the delivery of performance analysis across º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Sport, with both placement and voluntary roles available. Strength & Conditioning

There are opportunities for aspiring Strength and Conditioning coaches to join º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ's team of professional S&C coaches and support the delivery of S&C within our Performance Programmes. 
 
These roles provide students with a variety of opportunities to gain practical exposure to the elite sport environment under the guidance of experienced practitioners, and build up a portfolio of CPD and practical expertise. Such as:
 
- Data science (load monitoring etc.) 
- Coaching gym-based strength and power development 
- Coaching fatigue resistance and aerobic development 
- Wellness, sleep, hygiene etc. 
- Athlete education 
- Coaching speed, change of direction & agility development

Media

º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Rugby have a strong social media presence across the platforms of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, using these channels to engage with our supporters and our students past, present and future, keeping them up to date with what’s happening on and off the pitch.

With over 7000 followers on Twitter and 8000 followers on Instagram we have one of the biggest online profiles across º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, something we are incredibly proud of and plan to continue developing and growing. 

To deliver our media content we rely on student volunteers and there are opportunities every year to get involved in the following areas:

  • Live match day tweeting
  • Match report writing
  • Photography – match day & training
  • Graphic and content design
  • Video / written interview opportunities

Training, support and CPD opportunities are available from both the CVA and the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Sport Marketing & Communications team, along with day to day supervision from the rugby staff team.
