Selection and Deselection Policy for Performance Programmes
The selection and deselection process for inclusion in each performance programme squad will be available from the head coach for that sport.
Selection and deselection decisions will be made by the lead coach or director for that performance programme.
All performance programme athletes will sign a Code of Conduct, which includes:
Performance Athlete Code of Conduct statement:
I understand for selection to the squad I will need to demonstrate that I have the appropriate and necessary skills and commitment and that my performance, fitness and lifestyle are at the required level. I understand that selection involves complex judgements about the attributes of individuals and their potential contribution to a team or squad.
If an athlete is not happy with the selection decisions these steps may be taken:
- If not selected the athlete can seek honest and constructive feedback from the Head Coach in the first instance.
- If the athlete feels the sport has not followed due process, then the athlete can refer their non-selection to the Performance Programme Manager responsible for that sport.
- Information will be taken from the Head Coach and the athlete. This will be reviewed by three Performance Programme Managers who aren’t directly involved in that performance programme.
Deselection from the Squad:
- Head Coach informs the athlete for the reason(s) for deselection based on the criteria set out for that sport.
- The athlete can expect to receive honest and constructive feedback, alongside what would be needed for them to be considered for selection again.
- If the athlete feels the sport has not followed due process, then the athlete can refer their non-selection to the Performance Programme Manager for that sport.
- Information will be taken from the Head Coach and the athlete. This will be reviewed by three Performance Programme Managers who aren’t directly involved in that performance programme.
Appeals Process
- If an athlete feels the selection or deselection process has not be followed s/he can appeal to the Performance & Development Director.
- Information will be taken from the Head Coach and the athlete. This will be reviewed by the Performance & Development Director, and two other Performance Programme Managers who haven’t previously been involved in the selection/deselection process.
