My Learn To is designed to introduce students to a variety of different activities - teaching you the skills and techniques to get you playing with more confidence.

What is My Learn To?

The My Learn To, offers students (under & postgraduates) the chance to participate in a 6–7-week programme, led by experienced coaches. If you’d like to gain confidence or learn a new sport, you’re in the right place! 

The coaches are fully qualified who can work with you individually to achieve your personal goals. This programme is free from the stress of a competitive environment and allows you to develop at your own pace. 

What is on offer?

Our My Learn To programme is ever changing because we listen to student feedback and what they would like to see on offer! For semester 2 in the academic year 2022/23, we delivered squash, badminton, golf, men's cricket and women's cricket! Stay tuned on our website and through the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Sport App to stay up to date for further information for future academic years. My Learn To Squash

My Learn to Squash is available for people who are new to the sport. You will be introduced to the basic skills and techniques involved in the game. This programme aims to develop you as a player and the sessions are delivered by qualified coaches to help you achieve your personal goals. 

When? First session starts on the 5th of February 2024 and will run every Monday at the same time for 7 weeks.

Group 1: 17:00-18:00.

Group 2 18:00-19:00.

Where? The sessions are held at the Tennis Centre - Squash courts 1-3

Session Outcomes; by the end of the 7-week programme, you will:

  • Hopefully find out that playing squash is fun and a great way to keep fit
  • Know the basic rules of squash and how to score
  • Have learnt a basic understanding of the strategies and tactics of the game of squash
  • Have learnt how to play the main strokes in squash and have developed the basic skills for safe play
  • Have practiced key movements to get around the court
  • Have learnt the importance of warming up and stretching techniques to enhance fitness and injury prevention

My Learn To Golf

My Learn to Golf, is for people interested in golf, eager to learn but perhaps do not have any technical experience. This programme aims to teach you basic golf skills and techniques for complete beginners and some sessions may even include video analysis. The sessions take place at the Charnwood Golf & Leisure Complex. Please ensure you arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the session, transport to Charnwood Golf & Leisure Complex is not included. Equipment is provided but please wear trainers and comfortable clothing.

*These sessions are technical based with an introduction of how to play golf. Suitable for beginners. 

When? 

Group : First session starts on 12th of February 2024 and will run at 17:00-18:00 every Monday for 6 weeks.

Group 2: First session starts on 14th of February 2024 and will run at 17:00-18:00 every Wednesday for 6 weeks.

Group 3: First session starts on 16th of February 2024 and will run at 17:00-18:00 every Friday for 6 weeks.

Where? Sessions will be held at Charnwood Golf & Leisure Complex Driving Range - See the website for information

Session Outcomes: These sessions are for complete beginners. You will understand the principles of the game and how to strike a ball! See YouTube for a video that explains in depth the lessons you will receive.

My Learn To Badminton

My Learn to Badminton is available for people who are new to the sport. This programme aims to teach you basic badminton skills and techniques for complete beginners as well as how to improve for existing players. This programme aims to develop you as a player and the sessions are delivered by qualified coaches to help you achieve your personal goals. 

 

*These sessions are technical based with an introduction of how one plays badminton. 

When? First session starts on the 6th of February 2024 and will run at 17:00-18:00 every Tuesday for 6 weeks.

Where? Sessions take place at Sir David Wallace Sports Hall

Session Outcomes: These sessions are for complete beginners and you will learn the principles of the game as well as how to maintain a match.

My Learn to Tennis

My Learn To Tennis is available for those who are new or have never played tennis. This programme aims to introduce all skills that make up the game of tennis. It will be delivered by qualified coaches to help you develop as a player and achieve personal targets.

 

When? The first session starts on the 7th of February 2024 and will run at the 19:30-20:30 every Wednesday for 6 weeks.

Where? Sessions are normally held at the Tennis Centre. When you arrive at the centre, speak to reception and ask which courts the sessions are on.

Session Outcomes: These are training sessions focused on beginners

How to book

You can book your place through the Lboro Sport App, via the ‘My Learn To’ tile. Places on the programme require a £30.00 deposit fee, that will be refunded if you attend all 7 sessions.

Terms & Conditions

  1. Only º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students (under & postgrads) are permitted to attend My Learn To sessions.
  2. Places on the course require a £30.00 deposit fee that will only be refunded if the student attends all the sessions of the My Learn To programme. We understand that in the current climate, you might miss a session for valid reasons (e.g need to self-isolate because of COVID -19). If at any point the student misses a session, it is up to the discretion of the Recreational Sport Team to decide on a case-by-case basis if the student will receive a full refund.

FAQs

1) How long are the courses?

The courses range from 6 to 8 weeks in length, usually with one session per week. Most sessions last 1 hour in duration, but length of sessions can differ. Please check the specific information on each course for full details.

2) What level of ability do I have to be?

My Learn To courses are designed to provide coaching to beginners. This could be a pathway into to the AU Club.

3) Do I need my own equipment?

No, all equipment is provided! All you need to do is wear comfortable, sports clothing. But if you have your own equipment - feel free to bring it along. At the end of the programme if you attend all sessions, you will receive a starter pack enabling you to continue participating.

4) Do I have to pay?

The My Learn To requires a £30 deposit that will be refunded if you attend each session of the programme. Please see the Terms & Conditions for full details on the booking and refund process.

5) Who will be leading the course? 

The My Learn To programme is led by experienced and qualified coaches. The coaches work individually with each person to achieve their personal goals. 

6) What are the opportunities to continue participating in the sport after the programme finishes? 

Different sports will have different exit routes to participate in. You will be able to participate in the My Lifestyle Programme which offers free recreational sport activities throughout the year. The starter packs you will receive at the end of the programme gives you the chance to use the equipment in your free time as well. Why not use this opportunity to book facilities on campus to play with your friends! 

If you wish to take the skills you learnt from the My Learn To into a competitive environment the Intra Mural Sport (IMS) programme and Social Sport offer, may have an option for you. If you progress to a good standard there may also be the opportunity to be a part of Athletic Union (AU)
