Officiating
Officiating is a great way to learn leadership, communication skills and gain more sport specific knowledge, this strand seeks to develop a range of skills within our volunteers
Introduction
Officials are what make competitive sports fair and enjoyable for both teams. The strand has seen significant progress over the past few years implementing fully qualified officials in our Athletic Union, Hall Sport (IMS) and Social Sport programmes in sports including Football and Rugby.
The Coach & Volunteer Academy also recognises the need to support officials outside our core sports. This is why we can look to support all volunteer official in range of other sports should they wish to gain their qualifications and develop themselves further.
We even have a number of students receiving paid opportunities out in the community!

What We Offer?
Through the Coach & Volunteer Academy, you can gain your nationally recognised officiating qualifications free of charge if you officiate in our internal programmes on a voluntary basis.
Each year we put a number of student volunteers on officiating qualifications and pathways in the following sports:
- Football
- Rugby
- Netball
We also support a wide range of other sports and offer a number of opportunities and roles, whether you are part of an Athletic Union Club or you want to officiate in your local or community sport. Just get in contact with CVA@lboro.ac.uk to enquire.
The majority of our officiating courses are held on site, so there’s no need to even leave campus to gain a qualification!
Support & Development
We currently host officiating hubs on campus, for volunteers officiating in Football, Rugby and Netball. Being part of an officiating hub means that you have access to a wide range of officiating pathways in these sports and you will get the opportunity to meet, work alongside and be mentored by a number of other high level officials on campus.
You will also be able to access nationally recognised qualifications on campus for these sports and have the opportunity to undertake bespoke development workshops that support your progression as an official.
We run a number of broader masterclasses which all officials can attend with leading industry experts. In the past we have had a number of high profile speakers including Premier League referee; Kevin Friend.
Why get involved?
- Access to nationally recognised industry qualifications such as FA (Football) and RFU (Rugby) officiating qualifications.
- Access to in house specific technical training and mentoring from other referees in the industry.

How to get involved
To get involved in the Coach & Volunteer Academy you need to create an account on our volunteer management programme, the CVA Portal. This applies to both student volunteers and community volunteers as this is the online tool we use to advertise our opportunities, and volunteers will use to apply for any opportunities they’re interested in.
