University Mental Health Day
Thursday 14th of March is University Mental Health Day.
Come along to the Edward Herbert Building where we are running various activities between 10:00 and 14:00.

EHB Atrium
Drop by the main atrium in EHB between 10:00 and 14:00 to visit stands from the University's Mental Wellbeing Teams, LSU, the Campus View Medical Centre and many more!
Drop-in Activities
My Lifestyle @ 10:00 - 14:00
Come down to the EHB Foyer on the 14th March from 10am to 2pm to meet friendly staff face to face, who can explain and direct you to any sporting or physical activity opportunity available to you on campus. Staff will be able to explain how things works, go through the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Sport app with you and answer any questions you may have. We have a fantastic FREE TO PLAY programme called My Lifestyle with over 20 different sport or physical activity opportunities for you to try and socialise amongst your peers and make new connections and friends. We also have a mini game set up for you to come and give it a go!

Low Sensory Room @ 10:00 - 14:00
The Quiet room in the Chaplaincy will be available on University Mental Health Day. The room will be a low sensory area for use as and when throughout the day between 10a.m. and 2p.m. There will be fidget toys and colouring books available.

Short films @ 10:30 - 13:30
In Chaplaincy room EHB 2.09, there will be a series of short films being shown. These will be powerful and informative, around subjects relating to different mental health problems. There may be some sensitive subjects in the films so there will be members of staff on hand to discuss any issues raised.
LSU Classical string Quartet @ 12:00 - 13:00
LboroStrings, LSU Classical's student string quartet, was formed in 2022 and has since performed at a variety of events and concerts. Their repertoire ranges from traditional classical pieces to contemporary pop covers, and they love bringing a touch of pizzazz to the events at which they play. Sewing the Stress Away @ 12:00 - 14:00
You will be given your own canvas banner to decorate with embroidery, felt, ribbons and beads. You can sew flowers, affirmations or something abstract. You do not need any prior sewing experience; PhD researcher Penn Litchfield will teach you some basic stitching techniques and will be on hand to offer help and guidance. Getting involved in a fun, creative activity can have a positive impact on your wellbeing and may help you manage the symptoms of anxiety.
The workshop will last for two hours maximum, but you do not need to stay for the whole duration. You are welcome to turn up on the day and take part (space permitting), but advance booking is recommended as there will be limited materials.

Talk: Anxiety, when this becomes a problem @ 10:30 - 11:00
Anxiety is our body’s natural response to perceived threat and often leaves us with feelings of worry, fear or unease. In small doses, anxiety is helpful. It protects us from danger and focuses our attention on problems. When anxiety is too severe, or occurs too frequently, it can become debilitating.
The Wellbeing Team will explore some ideas of how to recognise what is happening and strategies to begin the manage different reactions. This will be in person, in the Chaplaincy room EHB 2.11 from 10.30 – 11a.m.
Navigating the recruitment process @ 11:10 - 12:00
The Careers team are to provide a presentation to do with navigating the recruitment process with a disability. The talk will cover adjustments, disclosure/sharing amongst other related issues.
This will be in person in the Innerspace area in the Chaplaincy from 11.10a.m. – 12 midday.
Mindfulness Session @ 12:30 - 13:00
It can be easy to rush through life without stopping to notice much. Paying more attention to the present moment, to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you can improve your mental wellbeing.
As part of University Mental Health Day, Hayley Whelport, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist is providing a mindfulness session in person, in Chaplaincy room EHB 2.11 from 12.30 – 1p.m.
Choose to disclose @ 13:15 - 13:45
The Mental Health Support Team will be providing a short talk. This will provide an overview of the benefits and support available when a student discloses a mental health problem. There will be time available for a Q&A and general discussion with the Mental Health Support Team.
This will be in person, in Chaplaincy room EHB 2.10 from 13.15 – 13.45.
Laughter Yoga
Join Chaplain Anthony Gimpel, a trained Laughter Yoga instructor, for this interactive session combining playfulness, laughter and breathing for pleasure and health- but not actual Yoga!
There are 15 spaces available for the staff session at 12:30 - 13:15.
For students, there are 10 spaces available per session. The sessions are running:
- 13:45 - 14:15
- 14:30 - 15:00
You're advised to bring some water with you and wear comfortable clothing (although no actual yoga will take place!) Please note: this is aerobic exercise so it’s not recommended for anyone with uncontrolled heart disease or epilepsy, incontinence, hernia, recent abdominal surgery.
You will received a confirmation email from the chaplaincy securing your place. Should the sessions be oversubscribed you'll be added to a waiting list.
