Mathematics anxiety – is it a thing?

Mathematics anxiety refers to feelings of tension and anxiety some individuals encounter when dealing with maths in academic and daily-life situations. It might interfere with mathematics performance, career opportunities, and an individual’s well-being.

In this video, Krzysztof Cipora gives a brief introduction to the topic of maths anxiety: its origins, aspects, prevalence and measurement, as well as its short- and long-term consequences. I conclude with some tips on what teachers can do to address the problem.

Dr Krzysztof Cipora is a Lecturer at the Centre for Mathematical Cognition.

His work focuses on elementary number processing from the perspective of cognitive psychology. He is also interested in mathematics anxiety and its relations to mathematics performance in different populations.
