Dealing with unwanted or unsolicited email (SPAM)
What action can you take?
The University receives many hundreds of thousands to millions of emails every week (and we reject an order of magnitude more!) and one person’s perception of a Junk email is different to that of another person.
Receiving a small volume of spam?
If an email appears to be Junk, is from a sender you don’t recognise, or looks like it’s attempting to get you to do something – Do not respond to it. (If the message is in your Junk Email folder, no action is required). If the message is something you’re not interested in, simply delete it.
Marking as Junk
If you receive a message from the same sender in the future, you can either delete it or mark the message as Junk
- Right click on the message you want to junk
- Select "Move"
- Now select the Junk Email folder (all email clients)
Subscribed to a mailing list or service?
If you’re receiving emails from a mailing list, journal, forum, discussion board or similar that you’re no longer interested in, then either unsubscribe from the list, turn off email notifications, or close your account.
Blocked Senders
Another option to prevent a sender getting emails to you is to use the Blocked Senders feature (Outlook, Outlook on the Web)
- Right-click on the spam email
- Select “Junk”
- Select “Block Sender”
