How to free up space on your device
Guidance
For updates to software applications, you may have to complete a self-install from time to time. Adequate disk space is necessary for installing these.
If you have been notified by IT Services to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 (22H2 Enablement Package) version, you will require 10GB of disk space to complete the update.
How to check disk space
To check the total disk space left on your Windows 10 device, select File Explorer from the taskbar, and then select This PC on the left. The available space for each drive will appear under the Devices and drives section.
The Microsoft website provides guidance for Windows 10 devices, which includes instructions on how to:
- Delete files with Storage Sense
- Uninstall apps you don't use anymore
- Move files to another drive
File Explorer
File Explorer is a file browser that helps you access, view and manage all the files stored on your computer.
File Explorer can be launched by either clicking the icon on the taskbar or Start menu, or pressing the Windows logo key + E on your keyboard.
Recommended actions:
- Check your downloads folder and remove anything that isn't necessary.
- Check for duplicate files and delete.
- Empty Recycle Bin. If it’s in there, then it shouldn’t be needed. Once this is emptied space can become available.
- Store unused files online via OneDrive - see link below.
