Additional Scale Increment
A consolidated reward that enables staff to move up the pay scale more quickly
Eligibility
All staff in grades 1 - 8.
Timeframe
This can happen once a year and nominations should be received by May 31.
What do you get?
Awarded once a year, where an individual is within the normal scale points for the grade. This is in addition to the normal increment and would allow the individual to progress more quickly through the grade. This is consolidated which means it becomes part of salary. This award is applied on a pro-rate basis and paid through the university's payroll. It is subject to tax and NICs.
Criteria
Recommendations should demonstrate that the individual has consistently contributed and performed above and beyond the expectations of their role, considering their current stage of progression within the grade and that their contribution is allowing the School/Service to achieve its plans.
This may be where an individual over the course of a year demonstrates that they are:
- Progressing within the role at a faster rate than would normally be expected
- Demonstrating positive impact and wider contribution to the University, which is above the normal expectations for the role
- Carrying out significant additional responsibilities on an ongoing basis which are not assessed to be above the individual's current grade.
Who nominates?
Nominations can be generated by line managers (or another relevant manager) via the annual School/Service Review Group (SRG).
Authorisation
Recommendations are considered and authorised by the School or Service Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
SLT should be chaired by the Head of School or Service (or their delegate) and should include the School/Service Senior HR Business Partner as an independent advisor in the process.
Nominations made by 31 May will usually be paid in August.
Any recommendation which differs from the norms set out above or where the panel cannot reach a consensus will be referred to the Director of HR.
Exceptions
If a nominated staff member receives a pay increment through an internal role move whilst the award is being considered, then they are no longer eligible for a consolidated award. If the award is approved then it will be converted and paid as a one-off bonus to the staff member in August.
Recording and Processing
Awards will be recorded on iTrent by HR Services.
Communication
Successful colleagues will receive a letter from the appropriate Dean or Director.
