What to do if you smell Gas

Gas situations are complex and expert help should be sought. Please report possible gas emergencies on University premises during normal working hours (Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm) to the Help Desk on 01509 222121 or out of normal working hours Security on 01509 222141.

Reporting the problem

When reporting a possible gas situation on º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ premises, please provide the following information:

  • The location of the problem.
  • The nature of the problem.
  • Your name and contact details.

All reports should be made to the Help Desk on 01509 222121 (normal working hours) or Security on 01509 222141 (outside normal working hours).

Safety Action to be taken

When you think the gas leak is indoors:

  • Turn off the gas supply if possible, this is usually near the gas meter.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not use electrical switches.
  • Do not set off fire alarms.
  • Do not create any sources of ignition (including use of mobile phones).
  • Open windows and doors.
  • Leave the building and wait outside for a gas engineer to arrive.

When you think the gas leak is outdoors

  • Close doors and windows next to the external gas cloud.
  • Keep people and sources of ignition away from the danger area.

 

Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning

Where gas appliances are located in buildings there is a risk of Carbon Monoxide being released into the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur even when you breathe in only small amounts of the gas.

Although carbon monoxide itself is odourless, there may be a report of fumes or similar. An immediate response is critical.

Six main symptoms to look out for

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Breathlessness
  • Collapse
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

Action

  • Turn off the gas supply and appliances.
  • Open windows and remove all persons to a well-ventilated place.
  • Get immediate medical attention (call an ambulance 999).
  • Call the Help Desk on 01509 222121 (normal working hours) or Security on 01509 222141 (outside normal working hours).
  • Request a first-aider from Security on 01509 222141.
