Cycling

Many students have bicycles and the University gets numerous enquiries and complaints each year regarding the conduct of students on cycles.

The University promotes cycling proficiency and the Highway Code to all students as part of the induction process

Campaigns on campus take place to target students riding without lights during the winter months. The University targets the problem by encouraging students to purchase lights, and have their bikes inspected to ensure compliance, as an alterative to being fined.

It is anticipated that this measure will lead to a reduction in cycle rider casualties, improve road safety for cyclists and other road users, and reduce opportunities for complaint. Whilst the University has no jurisdiction off campus for cycling, it is hoped that these initiatives will have a ‘knock-on’ effect off campus.
