º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ the Chaplaincy
Who we are
The Chaplaincy exists to serve the whole University community and is made up of two resources – its people and its physical space.
People
We are a diverse, inclusive, and multi-faith team of chaplains and advisors who are committed to supporting the welfare of students, staff, and alumni. We offer various activities to promote wellbeing and facilitate worship for different faiths. We offer support and advice to individuals, societies and the University on matters of faith and belief as requested.
Chaplains are here to help you through your life, studies, and work. They can support you through different challenges including homesickness, relationship break-ups, work and study difficulties, bereavement and matters relating to faith, spirituality, and vocation. Support is available in person, by phone, or online.
Chaplains work closely with colleagues across all the support services for students and staff and can refer on for additional support where necessary. You don’t have to be religious – they are here to support everybody.
Whatever you believe, whoever you are, whatever your background, whatever your doubts or questions – Chaplains would be glad to hear from you.
Physical space
The University Chaplaincy is based upstairs in the Edward Herbert Building. There you’ll find a Chapel, a Muslim prayer room (with male and female ablution facilities), meeting rooms, a quiet room, and an area for working and meeting friends. Some rooms are available for booking by staff and students. We also have a small multi-faith collection of books that can be borrowed by students and staff.
What we do
The Chaplaincy supports the University community throughout the year on both campuses - º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and London - by offering
1:1 listening service in person or online
A primary function of Chaplaincy is to provide space for people to be heard. A 1:1 appointment can be booked through the Chaplaincy office, via a referral or directly by staff and students.
Timetabled drop-ins
Chaplaincy provides in person drop-in sessions in different locations across the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ campus. Look out for chaplains in Schools, the library and other communal spaces.
Providing support to student faith societies and groups
The Chaplaincy facility is a vibrant place where student faith societies and groups gather during the week and evenings. Chaplains also work with student faith societies and groups to plan interfaith activities and events.
Visible, contributing presence at University events
Chaplains can be a valuable and helpful presence at significant milestones in the University’s calendar. Chaplains support halls of residence throughout the year and help with Freshers week and Open Days. They also lead services on behalf of the University, including Remembrance Day, special vigils and the Christmas carol service.
Chaplaincy led activities
The Chaplaincy runs a programme of weekly and monthly activities for students and staff, based around four themes: PAUSE, COMFORT, CREATIVE and FAITH. Examples of different sessions include laughter yoga, bereavement support and Christian morning prayer.
