NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre
The NIHR Leicester BRC is at the frontier of research into illnesses linked to respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and the consequences of inactivity.
The Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a collaboration between º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the University of Leicester.
Its overall purpose is to translate scientific breakthroughs in these areas into diagnostic tests, preventions and life-saving treatments for patients.
The Centre’s activities cover four themes:
- Lifestyle – exploring and developing innovative lifestyle interventions, focusing on diet and physical activity, to help prevent and treat chronic disease for the benefit of all.
- Respiratory – focusing on promoting the development of new and effective therapies for the treatment of lung disease, including severe asthma, chronic cough and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- Cardiovascular – with reseach investigating common cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias.
- Precision medicine – an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual differences in genes, environment, and lifestyle. The Centre has expertise in bioinformatics and molecular pathology.

The Leicester Biomedical Research Centre will recieve £26 million in funding over the next five years from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to fund pioneering research into medical advancements. Find out more here.
