LAPS opportunities

Our LAPS practitioners offer a vast range of services both across and beyond our University campus.

Initially assigned to one of our Performance Programmes, our practitioners work with athletes and coaching staff in various capacities in order to improve the psychological aspects of their performance.

These weekly hours are also very useful to the practitioners themselves, as they begin to put into practice the underpinning theory they already have and can log these hours on their QSEP or SEPAR qualification routes.

1-to-1s

We offer 1-to-1 work with athletes in both informal and formal settings. By exploring the details of the athlete’s life both within and out of sport, our practitioners are able to provide athletes with tailored individual support, helping them to improve their psychological skills, performance or well-being.

The work our Sport Psychologists do here is not limited to athletes, and they may also work 1-to-1 with coaches. Whether to help coaches better engage with their athletes, or to help disseminate psychological knowledge to the athletes through coaching staff, this can be a very useful tool.

An important part of this work is to bridge the gap between sport and mental health. Our practitioners cannot diagnose mental health disorders and so spotting where someone might be putting themselves or others in danger, and referring them on to more qualified hands is a very important part of the job.

Workshops and presentations

Workshops are a fantastic and engaging way to implement psychology into a sport.

These can be presented to the athletes, coaches and IDT members or everyone together, and allows for sport psychology to be learned and applied in a fun and practical way. They are also a great way to make use of the world-leading research conducted here at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

By using the University’s excellent facilities and engaging student base, there are plenty of opportunities to teach and educate sport psychology as well. The aim is to enhance awareness of what Sport Psychology is and how it can be useful.

Our LAPS practitioners also assist in running the Sport & Exercise Psychology Academy º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ (SEPAL). SEPAL is an optional module available to all students who wish to learn more about the subject and the career paths that it offers. Various presentations, workshops, as well as the chance to practice psychological skills in a safe environment, are all available here.

External contracts

LAPS also provides our practitioners with work outside the university. Using the network of experienced psychologists here we are always on the lookout for external contracts for our practitioners.

We also have a very strong peer network and look to support each other whenever possible when it comes to searching out other job opportunities in the industry.

Applying to LAPS

º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students will be made aware of any opportunities through their programmes.
