Robin is a Reader in Sport Psychology, BPS Chartered Psychologist, HCPC registered practitioner, and Course Director for the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology. He joined º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in January 2016 having previously held posts at Brunel University (2001-2004; 2008-2016), the University of Hong Kong (2004-2008) and the University of Glamorgan (1996-2000).

Robin is currently Executive Editor of the Journal of Sports Sciences (Sport and Exercise Psychology section). He was a founder member of the BPS Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology (DSEP) and the Expertise and Skill Acquisition Network (ESAN).

Robin’s body of research on perceptual-cognitive expertise and the attentional processes underlying ‘choking’ has been published in more than 60 journal articles and books chapters, which have attracted nearly 4000 citations, and an h-index of 31.

His research on anticipation and deception looks at what causes deception, how prior expectations influence anticipation and susceptibility to deception, and the effectiveness of perceptual training. His research on ‘choking’ focuses on the causes of skill failure and the implications for thriving under pressure. 

Robin is a member of the Sport Performance research theme and is currently working on two funded parasport projects in goalball (classification, supported by the International Blind Sports Federation), and wheelchair tennis (return of serve, supported by the Lawn Tennis Association). 

Robin has engaged in a variety of external activities over the past two decades, from early work as sport psychologist and performance analyst for GB Wheelchair Rugby, to more recent consultancy, advisory, and research activities on anticipation / deception / decision making with the Lawn Tennis Association, England football, Rugby Football Union, Leicester Tigers, New York Yankees, Leicester City FC academy, and Aston Villa FC academy.

He has been external examiner for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of Winchester, University of Brighton, University of Leeds, and St Mary’s University.
