Laura Barrett has a BSc in Physical Education, Sports Science and Chemistry (º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ) and a PhD in Exercise Physiology (º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ).
Laura's doctoral research was on the effect of exercise on cardiovascular risk factors in children and the effect of intermittent games activity on postprandial lipaemia in adolescents and young adults. Laura completed her PhD in November 2004 and following this took up a Research Associate post in the Institute of Youth Sport at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
In September 2005 she joined the Children's Health and Exercise Research Centre at Exeter University where she worked as a Research Fellow. Laura returned to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in September 2007 to take up the post of Lecturer in Exercise Physiology. Laura was promoted to Senior Lecturer in January 2024.
Laura's research interests lie within the area of exercise physiology and focus on the effect of exercise on postprandial metabolism and the health of adolescents, and the development of the physical and performance characteristics of youth athletes.
Current projects include:
- The effects of exercise on postprandial metabolism in adolescents.
- Elite youth hockey player development during the transition into university.
- The development of a multi-wavelength photoplethysmography sensor for the continuous monitoring of vital signs including heart rate, respiration rate, temperature and oxygen saturation.
